Hyla Cundiff Obituary

Hyla Bynum Cundiff

September 26, 1927 - November 27, 2024

Hyla Sue Bynum Cundiff, the eleventh child of William P. and Belva W. Bynum (both deceased) of North Wilkesboro, NC, was born September 26, 1927. She transitioned to her eternal home on November 27, 2024.

She received her early education in the Wilkes County Schools and continued her education earning a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Johnson C. Smith University and later, a Master's Degree from North Carolina A&T State University. Her love of athletics and children lead her to teach and coach the young girls at her high school Alma Mater, Lincoln Heights High School.

She moved with her family in 1956, to Greensboro, NC, and taught at Washington Street, J.C. Price, F.D. Bulford and Vandalia Elementary Schools before her retirement in 1980.

Baptized as an infant, Hyla committed her life to Christ at age 12 and was a faithful member of Beulah Presbyterian Church in North Wilkesboro, NC, until she moved to Greensboro. She continued her walk in faith at St. James Presbyterian Church on Forbis Street. Throughout her life, she was ardently involved with choral music, Sunday School, Bible Study and membership in the United Presbyterian Women. She also enjoyed her Christian service with the Trustee Board, Altar Guild and Compassion Committee. She is dearly loved by the many "Church Children" and "adopted" adult granddaughter, Alycia Nelson. Hyla carried her faith in community work as well, driving cancer patients to their appointments and receiving a WFMY volunteer award for her community service. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Hyla was predeceased in death by her husband of 64 years, Frederick D, Cundff, Sr. and is survived by her two sons, Frederick D. Cundiff, Jr and Roderick C. Cundiff of Greensboro, NC; her daughter/niece, Candace B. Currence of Mitchellville, MD; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Celebration of life is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., December 6, 2024, following family visitation at 11 a.m., at St. James Presbyterian Church, 820 Ross Avenue, Greensboro, NC. The Internment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens of Guilford, 5710 Riverdale Dr., Jamestown, NC 27282. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. James Presbyterian Church or Johnson C. Smith University.

We thank God for Mrs. Cundiff's faithful witness and service. Everyone who knew her felt her love and kindness. Her beautiful singing voice and the love expressed for her children and husband served as an inspiration to many of us at Saint James Presbyterian Church. A good heart has stopped beating, but a heart that has touched so many lives can't help but live on in those it loved. Fred and Roderick, thank you for sharing your beautiful mother with us.
