Obituary of Ian Michael Hill
Ian Michael Hill, age 39 of Bloomington, passed away on Saturday, December 28th, 2024, in Minneapolis, MN.
Ian Hill was born on June 1st, 1985, in Minneapolis, MN to Jill Welle and Craig Hill. In 2007, Ian graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry from Carleton College, where he also met his wife, Corrie. After starting as good friends, they began dating in 2006 and married in 2009, eventually going on to have four beautiful daughters together. They often described each other as the loves of their lives and being each other's very best friend. Ian was a proud father and thoroughly enjoyed seeing his daughters grow and develop.
In 2013, Ian earned his PhD in Materials Science from the University of Minnesota, Chemical Engineering and Material Science (CEMS) Department. He completed his postdoctoral research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia before joining Gustavus Adolphus College in Fall of 2014. As a Continuing Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Ian was a popular instructor who shaped the experience of hundreds of Gustavus students, both majors and non-majors alike. He possessed the unique ability to make complex concepts accessible and engaging, fostering a love of learning in all who knew him.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Ian possessed a remarkable wit, a kind and humble spirit, and a genuine love for life. He was a gifted listener and a cherished friend, always ready to lend an ear and offer support. With a passion for patisserie, especially donuts, and a talent for sourdough bread making, sharing his creations became a cherished tradition. His 'dad jokes' were legendary, bringing laughter and joy to those around him.
Survivors include his loving wife of 15 years, Corine (Corrie) Hill, his twin three and a half year old daughters, Estelle and Sylvia Hill; his mother, Jill Welle (partner, Terry Middendorf); father, Craig Hill (partner, Shari Berger); brother Sean Hill (wife, Jessica), niece and nephew, Layla and Adam Hill; grandmother, Marcie Welle; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Ian was preceded in death by daughters Faye (passed 2016) and Selene (passed 2017), his grandparents, Edwin and Allie Hill and Donald Welle.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 6th, from noon to 4:00 PM, in the Snyder Auditorium at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum; 3675 Arboretum Drive, Chaska, MN 55318.
