Ian Lennon Kersting, a New Orleans prosecutor, died by suicide on Jan. 4 He was 34.
A lifelong New Orleanian, Ian started his academic career at Newcomb Nursery and Newman School. He graduated from Ridgewood Preparatory School and Tulane University. He earned a law degree from Loyola University in 2020.
He worked as an investigator for the Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office while in Law School and continued working there after being admitted to the bar in October 2020. In 2022, he became an Assistant District Attorney in the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office. Recently, he was assigned to the SAKI unit: a division that works in partnership with NOPD to investigate and prosecute sex crimes cases through the use of recovered DNA evidence.
Ian held a black belt in karate and an open-water certificate in SCUBA diving. A kind, thoughtful, and introspective soul with a droll sense of humor, he also enjoyed gaming and model building. His death has brought unfathomable sadness to those who knew, cared, and loved him.
His father, Jeffrey Kersting of Albuquerque New Mexico, died in 2018.
Survivors include his mother, Karen Kersting, relatives in Texas, Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Detroit, as well as many friends in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a gathering at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70119, on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 1 PM until 3 PM.
