Ida Kathleen Spain Johnson, age 81, of Colonial Heights, VA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Born in Petersburg, VA on January 3, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Sampson Camden Spain and Lillian Nunnally Spain. Mrs. Johnson was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose warmth and kindness had a lasting impact on all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Duke “Buck” Johnson; four children, Kenneth Johnson (Michelle), Robert S. Johnson (Frank Myers), David Johnson (Nadean), Amy Johnson (Kevin Giles); brother, James Spain; close nephew, Troy Spain, in addition to many other nieces, nephews and extended family members. Mrs. Johnson also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Mark Johnson (Leah), Kyle Johnson, Devin Johnson (Madison) and Dillin Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Everleigh Kaye and Ellie Kathleen Johnson, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.
Renowned for her selflessness, Mrs. Johnson consistently prioritized the needs of her family and friends. She found fulfillment in supporting and caring for those around her. In her personal time, she enjoyed preparing meals for loved ones, gardening, and planting flowers, activities that reflected her gentle and vibrant nature. Mrs. Johnson also took pride in maintaining an organized and welcoming home, ensuring it remained a place of comfort and warmth for all who entered.
Her enduring kindness, thoughtfulness, and unwavering dedication to her family, coupled with her resilience through health challenges, serve as a lasting inspiration. Mrs. Johnson’s legacy will continue through the many lives she touched with her generosity, compassion, and steadfast love.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Interment will take place privately.
