Irene M. Engel

Irene M. Engel, 98, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, at Miller's Merry Manor in Walkerton.
Born on April 11, 1927, to the late Walter and Lucile Reget. Irene dedicated her life to education, family, and faith. She taught for many years with the South Bend Community School Corporation, where she touched countless young lives with her kindness, patience, and love of learning.
A devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Notre Dame, Irene's faith was a guiding light throughout her life. She cherished time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren, who were her greatest joy.
Irene is survived by her loving daughter, Jennifer Engel, and four sons: Stephen J. Engel, Francis A. Engel Jr., Michael Engel, and Daniel J. Engel. She also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren: Lauren Beagen, Frank Engel III, Melissa Ciuk, Greg Engel, Jeff Engel, and JJ Cummings; as well as her dear sister, Shirley Ritter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother James Reget who now welcome her home in eternal peace.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on November 22, 2025, with a visitation from 10AM-11AM with mass to follow, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Lakeville. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery in South Bend.
Irene will be remembered for her faith, compassion, and lifelong devotion to her family and community.
