Irene Greco, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on November 20, 1938, in
Brooklyn, New York, Irene spent her early years in the vibrant community of Brooklyn before moving to Staten Island, where she cultivated deep roots and lasting connections.
Irene's life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and unwavering support for those around her. In her professional journey, she began her career as a telephone operator before finding her calling as an EKG technician at St. Vincent's Hospital on Staten Island. Her dedication to her work was evident, as she brought both skill and compassion to her role, positively impacting the lives of countless patients.
Known for her sharp wit and a great sense of humor, Irene was a beacon of light in any room. Her sarcastic yet endearing nature endeared her to family and friends alike, and she was always quick with a short, funny comment that could lift anyone's spirits. She had a unique ability to find joy in the little things, particularly in her love for the slot machines, which became a cherished pastime, especially during trips to Atlantic City with her late husband, Sam Greco.
Irene is survived by her loving daughter, Carol, and son-in-law, Joseph Poveromo. She will be deeply missed by her niece, Lynn Altobello, and her cherished grandchildren, Nicole, Joey, and Nicholas. Additionally, her legacy will continue through her six great-grandchildren: Samantha, Lia, James, John, Matthew, and Nicholas, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride. Irene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sam, and her sisters, Jeannie and Diana, who will welcome her into their loving embrace in heaven.
Irene's family and friends will remember her not just for her humor, but for her profound generosity and the countless ways she touched their lives. She dedicated much of her life to helping others, always the first to lend a hand or offer a comforting word. Her spirit of kindness and compassion will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
Services to honor Irene's life will be held on February 7, 2026, from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the John Vincent Scalia Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate the remarkable life of a truly wonderful woman.
