Alice Irene Shadowens, 93, of Johnston City, passed away at 9:25 a.m., Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Deaconess Hospital in Marion.

Irene was born on January 20, 1933, in Williamson County, Illinois to Donald William and Mandana (Rogers) Grant. She was united in marriage to John Wayne Shadowens on October 19, 1961, in Herrin. Together they shared 56 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 29, 2017.

Irene was a 1948 graduate of Johnston City High School. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Johnston City. Irene spent her life being a dedicated homemaker and taking care of her family. She was previously employed at GTE as a telephone operator for several years. In her free time, Irene enjoyed solving puzzles and cooking. Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren and her dog, Chigger.

She is survived by her son, John (Bobbi) Shadowens of Benton, IL and daughter, Sherry (Krzysztof) Padyasek of Cary, IL; seven grandchildren, Jamie (Joe) Ashleman of Mt. Vernon, IL Nicholas (Beth) Forristall of Hopkinsville, KY, Kelci McGrath of Cary, IL , Trey (Ellie) McGrath of Aurora, IL, Blane (Ciara) Miller of Benton, Illinois, Makennah (Jared) Johnston of Benton, IL and Jenna (Ryan) Lind of Marion; nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; two brothers, William (Sandra) Grant of Johnston City, IL and Eugene Grant of Johnston City, IL; three nephews. She is also survived by her good friends and neighbors, Bill and Donna Bullock.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Cade Shadowens; one niece and one nephew.

Funeral service will be 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery in Marion with Pastor Kirk Kay officiating.

Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home on the day of the service.

Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City is entrusted with the arrangements.
