Irene Sredzinski Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes – MacDonald Chapel - Howell on Jun. 11, 2025.
Irene Agnes Sredzinski, age 96, longtime resident of Howell MI, passed away Monday, June 9th, in Brighton MI, alongside the loving comfort of her family and Woodland Village caregivers. Irene was born September 26, 1928, in Detroit MI the daughter of Alfred and Agnes (Caldwell) Nixon, recent Scottish immigrants. Irene, also known as "Scottish Lassie" by her late husband Leon (and whom she in turn referred to as "Polish Count") is survived by her 8 children: Barbara (Walter) Oleksyk, Ronald (Lynn), Donald (Cynthia), Chris (Julie), Gail (James) Bartel, Deborah (Richard) Williams, Sharon (Timothy) Ford, Sandra Radtke, and her daughter-in-law Janice Sredzinski. Irene is also survived by her 24 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Leon, son Kenneth Sredzinski, granddaughter Stacey Sredzinski and her brother the Reverend Robert Nixon.
Irene enjoyed reading mysteries, poetry, principled political writings, classic books, her precious Bible, and saintly resources. Her Catholic faith and Christian motherhood informed every aspect of her life within her 70-yr marriage to Leon. Irene gracefully and fearlessly weathered life's bittersweet moments, reveling in updates around her ever growing family and precious "babies". Irene was a staunch advocate of protecting life in the womb and could fiercely defend her foundational biblical truths and political stance to anyone she met.
Unknown to many, Irene had a fierce competitive streak having been an accomplished high school swimmer and serious board game strategist. She also had a love of music as former pianist at Trinity Presbyterian Church during Highschool. This would pull several of her children into the same musical passion. Irene loved swimming and water activities all her life, and to no surprise, her 60+ years of life on Lake Chemung and her Florida swimming pool were "happy places" for her. She and Leon were never far from family or water activities. Together, they enjoyed opportunities to travel around the nation, Ireland, London and of course to her beloved Scotland.
From a community perspective, following her homemaking years, Irene became a successful licensed real estate agent and member of the Livingston County Association of Realtors. Irene proudly represented the "ERA Realty" brand logo around Livingston County in her Red/White/Blue attire and "color coordinated" Blue Cadillac.
Visitation will be at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home/Mac Donald Chapel in Howell MI, on Monday, June 16th, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a Rosary Service starting at 6:30 pm.
As long-standing member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Howell, a Mass of Resurrection will be held Tuesday, June 17th, at 10:30 am, followed by interment at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery. Friends and family will then have a 1pm "Celebration of Life" luncheon at Chemung Hills Country Club.
