Irene Drucker Zaptin, 75, of Ashburn, passed away peacefully at home with her family on January 24, 2025. She experienced various complications following a knee replacement surgery in November and did not recover.
Irene was born on June 6, 1949 to V. Peter and Laurette Drucker in Queens, New York. She grew up on Long Island and graduated with her Bachelor's degree from St. Elizabeth College and her Master's degree from Hofstra University. She married in 1971 and moved with her husband to multiple duty stations where he was deployed as a career Marine before settling down in Virginia when he retired.
Irene's greatest joy was being a Mother to her children and Mimi to her grandchildren. Most of all, she was soulmate to her husband of 53 years whom she loved dearly. They were so connected that she often said together they equaled one whole person.
Irene was a very thoughtful and friendly individual. She was a middle school and high school Latin and English teacher for 25 years, and she then retired happily to babysit her grandchildren. When her children were younger, she cheered for them at every sporting event and activity and continued this support for her grandchildren. In retirement, she traveled to many countries with her husband and friends, took American Sign Language, played bridge, and enjoyed other social activities at her Ashby Ponds community. She treasured meeting up with friends and her siblings.
Irene was preceded in death by her mother, father, and three siblings - Paul Drucker, Christine Collier, and Cecile Banks. She is survived by her husband, Edward R. Zaptin, her two children, Jeanne Zaptin and Edward V. Zaptin, and her four grandchildren, Anna Zaptin, Melissa Zaptin, Joseph Koczara, and Edward A. Zaptin. She also is survived by her siblings, Judith Griffin, Elyse Gray and husband Donald, Peter Drucker, Thomas Drucker and wife Ann, Kathryn Krentsa and husband Jeffrey, and brother in law, Rodney Banks, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Ashburn on February 7, 2025 at 10:30am followed by a reception at Loudon Funeral Chapels in Leesburg. Internment will be held privately at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.

Frost Middle School Friends

Irene was one of the kindest and gentlest people you could ever hope to meet. She spoke with such pride and love for her family. Our sympathies go out to Ed, Jeanne, Eddie (as Irene called him), and all the family. - Jim Andrukonis

I´m so saddened by this news. Irene was a kind and warm person and an excellent teacher. - Patti White Welch

Oh goodness, this is so sad....I remember her from my first years at Frost. Such a lovely person. - Michelle Sheble Capozzoli

I am so sorry to hear of Irene´s passing. She was a very sweet woman. She often ate lunch with the "lunch bunch ". She was a regular at our annual back to school luncheons, I will miss her. Condolences go to her family and friends. - Cathy Faraj

This is such sad news. Irene was incredibly kind to me when I first moved to Virginia and started at Frost in fall 1998. She introduced me to her daughter, Jean, who became my first VA friend and we lived together for one year. She was a wonderful person and incredibly talented educator. She will be missed. - Lynne Guadagnino Bursch

I´m so sad to hear this news. She was so kind to me, mentoring me when I first started at Frost. -Chris Cashman

I am in complete shock . She was so young at heart; always ready for a new adventure with a smile on her face. As a new teacher to Frost, she invited me to join her lunch group and made me feel at home right away. This news makes me so very sad. Frances Lawrence

My memories echo Lynne's. Irene shared her classroom with me during my first year at Frost. In January of 1998 (in my first few weeks on the job at age 22), I overzealously detached the top of her lectern from its base when I was trying to demonstrate the difference between an independent and a dependent clause to my English class. Irene was a gracious, patient host of this absolutely green (and possibly feral) young educator. I will always think of her fondly. Sending much love to her family and friends-especially all of my Frosties. - Renee Kingan

Irene had the kind of personality that you want to have on your staff....she made everyone feel welcome and supported. I'm so sorry to hear that she ia gone too soon. - Jennifer Schwabline Eakin

Over the years I had many 25 minute lunches with her. Her love of her family always came through. If I´m not mistaken, her Latin students at Frost and WTW went on to win several national competitive awards. - Mike Trone
Oh no, I am so sorry to hear this! Her classroom was right across from mine. She was such a wonderful teacher. - Deb Metzker

I am very sorry to hear this, too. She was a wonderful person. - Meg McLane
