Grandma Iris Mae Schaumburg (née Harmel), 93, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus Christ on February 18, 2025, in Portland, Oregon.
Iris was born January 1, 1932, in Raymond, South Dakota, to Arthur and Katherine Harmel. She was baptized on February 7, 1932, and later confirmed into the Evangelical Lutheran Church on June 2, 1946. Faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she remained a devoted Christian throughout. She never missed an opportunity to hear the word of God and to worship her Lord and Savior. She took great joy in bringing flowers for the altar and baking treats for fellowship after Sunday services.
Beyond her faith, Iris found happiness in simple pleasures and cherished time spent with family and friends. She could often be found at Polar King, a small family diner in Gresham, enjoying coffee or lunch with friends. She loved sewing, crocheting, gardening, watching game shows, and reading. Most recently, she delighted in spending time with her great-great-granddaughter Scarlett, walking laps around the house while Scarlett crawled beside her.
The family was at the heart of everything Iris did. She never missed a game, dance recital, school event, graduation, birthday, or celebration of any kind-she was always there. She was not only a mother and grandmother but also an aunt, a friend, a great-grandmother, a great-great-grandmother, and an adopted grandma to many.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Terri Krenz of New River, Arizona; her daughter Janet Lease of Nehalem, Oregon; three grandchildren: Tawnya Payne (husband Rick) and Lindsay Lewis (husband Jeff) of Gresham, Oregon, and Graham Lease (partner Kayla) of Wilmington, North Carolina; four great-grandchildren: Kaleb Krenz-Payne (wife Adryanna), Kassidy Payne, Amaya Lewis of Gresham, Oregon, and Bentley Lease of McMinnville, Oregon; and one great-great-granddaughter, Scarlett Krenz-Payne of Gresham, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Vance Schaumburg; her children Lynn and Tony; her parents Arthur and Katherine Harmel; her sisters Norma, Leona, Vivian, and Shirley; her brothers LaMar, DuWaine, and Marvin; and her grandson Markey.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on March 14, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church (7610 NE Fremont St., Portland, OR 97213). Viewing will take place one hour before the service at the church. Refreshments will be provided following the service. A graveside service will be held at Lincoln Memorial (11801 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, OR 97086) at 2:00 PM. Seating at the cemetery will be limited but all are welcome to attend.
Iris's presence in our everyday lives will be deeply missed. She knew she was going home to the Lord; we were blessed to have had her for as long as we did. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
