On August 2, 2025, Isabel Fermina Avelar passed away at home in Watsonville, CA. She was 77.
On July 8, 1948, Isabel was born to her parents Nicolas Avelar Veles and Juana Prieto Rubalcava in Nochistlan, Zacatecas, Mexico.
Isabel migrated to Watsonville in 1970 when she was 20 years old. She married her husband in 1974. She began working at Richard Shaw Frozen Foods in 1976 and remained working there until their doors closed in 2006. She was part of the Teamsters Local 912.
She loved spending her days in her garden with all her plants. She loved cooking for her grandchildren, especially her homemade flour tortillas and bean burritos. She enjoyed going to the Casinos. She was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church. She was a resident of Watsonville.
She is survived by her children, Paul (Christina) Garcia, Carlos Avelar Garcia, Maria De Carmen Puga, Refugio “Cookie” Garcia Jr, Jose Alfredo “Freddy” (Darcey) Avelar Garcia, Guadalupe “Lupe” (Kelly) Avelar Garcia, Teresa (Rolando) Avelar Donoso, and her daughter in law Angela Avelar, her siblings, Eva Avelar Prieto and Teresa Avelar, and 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Pete Avelar and her son in law, Marco Lampon, and her siblings, Luis Avelar, Toña Avelar and Salvador Avelar.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Ave Maria Memorial Chapel. Mass will be held on August 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Valley Catholic Church with the burial to follow at Valley Public Cemetery.
Donations to assist the family with funeral expenses can be made to Teresa Avelar Donoso.
