Ivy Hall Hinds (nee Thompson), known affectionately as "Dolly," was born
on February 21, 1930, at 10 Williams Street in Kingston, Jamaica. She was
the fifth child of the late Joseph and Jane Thompson (nee Delhall). Ivy spent
her formative years at Rockfort, in Kingston, where she attended primary
and secondary schools. Unbeknown to many, Ivy came from a musical fam

ily. She was taught to play the guitar and read sheet music by her talented
brothers, Vernon "Boogsie," Lester, Roy, and Vivian – renowned musicians
of the 1950s and popularly known in Jamaica and Great Britain as "The
Bushy Brothers." Ivy's only sister, Sylvia, "Tiny," played bass fiddle with the
Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica. Ivy's siblings all preceded her in death.
In 1951, Ivy married the love of her life, Stephen Hinds, Jr. Their union
lasted for over sixty years, producing seven children, including Stephen III,
who passed away in 1973 during his military service in the United States Air
Force. Her beloved husband joined the ancestors in October 2011.
In 1965, Ivy immigrated to the United States and the family settled in
Brooklyn, New York, where she gave birth to her seventh child. After
retirement, Ivy (and her husband) relocated to Florida for a less hectic
lifestyle, and to spoil their grandchildren. Ivy was extraordinarily proud
of the accomplishments of all her children. She beamed with inward
and sometimes overt pride at their academic, professional, and personal
achievements, though she remained infinitely saddened by the untimely
passing of her first-born.
Ivy was admired for her quiet demeanor and kind heart. In their reflections
of "Aunt Dolly," younger members of the family would recall Christmas time
in Brooklyn when every child in the family was sure to receive a special gift
from her, which made them feel extra special. Kindness and compassion
were intrinsic traits that embodied her true essence. Ivy was a woman
of modesty – remarkably humble – yet dignified in her role as elder and
matriarch of her family.
Ivy was fiercely devoted to her family. She was an extraordinary wife,
mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, friend, and
confidant. Her unselfish nature and benevolent spirit lived and thrived in
the heart and soul of this phenomenal woman until her peaceful transition
on April 16, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.
Ivy is survived by sons: Hugh and Devon. Daughters: Marlene (Anthony),
Sandra (Dudley), Carol (Phillip), Audrey (Wayne). Grandchildren: Damion,
Teisha, Jihan (Durron), Tamaika, Tifani, Dudley III "Clint," Hugh Jr., "Huey,"
Tania, Andre, Shaena, Tyree, and Tahlia. Great-grandchildren: Niaya, Sanae,
