J. R. Stanley, 94, of Levelland, Texas went to be with Jesus on September 10, 2023.
Born to Earl and Roxie Stanley on May 9, 1929, in Hockley County, Texas, he was the 5th of seven children. When WWII broke out, his 3 older brothers joined the armed services and his older sister headed to California to help build ships. So, at the young age of 12, J.R. became an adult taking care of the farm with his younger brother, Harley. Taking over the farm and helping with the livestock instilled the hard work ethic it took to survive and be successful. He saw many changes in the farming industry over the years, from using a horse and one-row implements to the progression of the tractors and equipment we have today. He took pride in his fields over the years, passing on that hard work legacy to his son, Len.
J. R. believed in being involved. Over the years he was a member of the Pettit CO-OP Gin, Plains Cotton Cooperative, Farmers Cooperative Compress, and Plains Cotton Oil Mill. He was on the Pettit School Board for 5 years, the Levelland School Board for 11 Years and was Hockley County Commissioner Precinct 3 for 20 years.
J. R. married Bettye Jo Eskew on June 19, 1948. They lived in Hockley County most of their lives, being devoted to family and many friends.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Bettye Stanley; daughter, Jackie Shugart and husband Edward; son, Len Stanley and wife Jeannie; sister-in-law, Frances Stanley; grandchildren, Kim (Stacy) Springfield, Aaron Shugart, Rhonda (Austin) Agnew, Misty (Nathan) Brummett, Macey (Aaron) Bracken; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Roxie Stanley; granddaughter, Mindy Stanley; grandson, Matt Stanley; brothers, Dave, Jack, Dee, Harley, James; and sister, Wilma Stanley.
