Jack Cushman Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 7, 2025.
John B. Cushman Sr., known by family and friends as Jack, passed away at the age of 100 on September 12, 2025. Born on December 9, 1924, in Lansing, Michigan, Jack's life was marked by a steadfast loyalty to his family and his community.
Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Isabel (Druar), with whom he shared a lifetime of cherished memories, his sister, Mercedes Smith, and his daughter-in-law, Margaret (Berardo) Cushman. His legacy of love and strength lives on through his children, Jack (Cheryl), Michael (Mary Ellen); his grandchildren Jamie Holt, Katie (Christopher) Keller, Michael (Susanne) Cushman; five great-grandchildren; Justin, Jason, Jenna, Teagan, and Evan; several nieces and nephews, and dearest friend Fran Shelley, all of whom will continue to honor his memory.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care provided by his hospice nurse, Colleen Strzyzewski.
A graduate of St. Mary's High School in Lansing, Jack's commitment to service was evident early on. In 1943, at the height of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became a member of the Philippine Liberation force. He was honorably discharged in 1946, a decorated veteran who had proudly served his country.
Returning to Lansing, Jack joined the Lansing Fire Department as a firefighter. His work ethic and dedication to the Department allowed him to rise through the ranks and retire as a Deputy Chief in 1984 after 37 years of distinguished service. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity and valor who led by example.
Following his retirement, Jack enjoyed playing golf and looked forward to spending his winters in Fort Lauderdale with his wife. He remained active in his later years, participating in exercise classes at the East Lansing Senior Center and maintaining a daily walking routine through the streets of Lansing. He will remain a role model for his children and grandchildren for the self-discipline and common sense he exhibited throughout his long life. May he rest in peace.
A private ceremony will be held with Jack's immediate family at a later date at which time his remains will be interred in the mausoleum at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Lansing, MI.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Greater Lansing Food Bank.
