Jack Sheridan Jones passed away Saturday, January 31, 2026 at the age of 76. He spent the previous week doing what he loved, golfing in his favorite place Palm Springs, California. Jack was born in
Ogden, UT, on November 14, 1949, to Velma Clontz. Jack lived a life that was just what he wanted. His family, friends, and golf-especially his four hole-in-ones-were what mattered most to him. A native of
Ogden, Utah, Jack also lived in
Phoenix, AZ;
Layton, UT;
Mountain Green, UT; and
St. George, UT, before settling in South Ogden for the past 10 years.
In Jack's younger years, he loved sports and his friends. He attended Ogden High School, and graduated with the Class of 1968. He often told stories about playing football and winning the state championship. Jack also spoke frequently of his letterman jacket, which he left in a field in Hooper after mudding in his Mustang. He was very disappointed that he did not find his jacket. Jack was very adventurous in his childhood and teen years, always keeping his mother on her toes.
Jack was an ambitious man. His career started in 1970 with the Forest Service drawing maps. He then went to the IRS and worked in Microfilm and Automated Records. After, he joined Hill AFB to devote 35 years of his life to the Federal Government. At Hill AFB, he climbed the ranks to become the Chief of Pricing. He was eventually promoted to the Chief of the Aircraft Division until ultimately retiring as the Director of Staff under General Kevin Sullivan in 2005. Many affectionately refer to him as the "Best Boss Ever." Jack's work was an extension of his character-generous, loving, and thoughtful. His colleagues admired him for his dedication, and his family loved him for his unwavering commitment to them.
In retirement, Jack worked for Karta and Sumaria. He spent many years doing taxes where he made many friends and clients. He was committed to visiting each client in their home during tax season. He remained actively traveling with his wife and the "Golfing Criminals" (you know who you are). Jack also loved to go out and eat every day. Every morning, he would go to McDonald's for a Sausage, Egg McMuffin and a senior coffee. He would then take his wife out to dinner later that night. Most of all, Jack loved carrying the title, "Papa Jack."
Papa Jack loved and supported his grandkids in all that they do. He would immediately light up when he would hear about their recent accomplishments. He was especially proud when his grandkids would call to let him know they made the Honor Roll. Papa Jack loved sharing all his favorite things with his grandchildren: his great taste in music (especially Reba); his love for cupcakes; Hershey Kisses ("Hand me 4 kisses," he would say), Diet Coke; and coffee with 2 Splenda packets. "Pass the yellow ones" is what he would say.
He was extremely loved by all, but none more so than his family. Jack is survived by his loving wife, LuJean Butters Jones. They were married October 8, 1971 and spent 54 loving years together. Together, they have three children and eight grandchildren. Justin Jones and his children: Jayden, Madison, Tyson, and Kylee. Darci Jones (her fur babies). Sean Jones (Hollee) and their children: Stratten, Charlee, Jack, and Livee. Jack is also survived by his brother, Daniel (Judy) Jones. Jack loved spending time with his family and leaves a great legacy behind.
Jack is preceded in death by his mother, Velma Clontz, and his three sisters, "Bunny" (LaReah June Wright), 'Bobby" (Barbara Clemente), "Wannie" (Luana Harris), all whom he loved dearly.
