James "Jay" P. Welch Jr., born on April 10, 1952, in Pulaski, Virginia, passed away on December 6, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio with his beloved family by his side. He was 73 years old and lived in Poland, Ohio. Jay leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness that touched the lives of those around him.
Jay dedicated a significant portion of his early years to serving his country, an experience that deeply shaped his character and perspective on life. Following his military service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he contributed to the workforce through his roles at Ohio Central Railroad and Heckett MultiServ, where he was known for his strong work ethic and camaraderie with colleagues.
A member of American Legion Post #235, Jay was deeply engaged with his community, participating actively in activities that fostered connections among veterans and neighbors alike. His personality was marked by a genuine love for people; everyone who met him found a friend in Jay. His joyful spirit was often seen during his frequent shopping trips, where he took his time to navigate every aisle, spreading cheer and conversation along the way.
Outside of work and community involvement, Jay cherished his personal interests. He was an avid hunting enthusiast and a devoted fan of Ohio State and the Yankees, often sharing his passion for both with friends and family. In quieter moments, he could be found relaxing on the porch, immersed in his favorite bluegrass music—an activity that brought him much joy and relaxation.
Nothing was more important to Jay than his family. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, James "Jimmy" (Holly) Welch III of Youngstown, Nicole Wheatley of Austintown, Samantha Welch (fiancée Allen Fisher) of Hubbard and Sierra Welch (fiancée Austin Kupec) of Poland; Sisters, Sharon Rudisill of Virginia, and Sheila (George) Cornell of Girard; brother, Gary Welch of Girard; sister in law, Kim Welch; his grandchildren, Ashlee, Chelsea, Nick, Jacqueline, Chase, Angeleena and Jackson; seven great-grandchildren; and his beloved companion, Linda Beck of Poland, whom he knew since grade school and joyfully found his way back to later in life; and many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy (Hodge) Welch Sr.; brother Eddie Welch; and sisters, Sandra Boccieri and Sealenia Jornigan.
Visitation will be held on December 12, 2025, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM followed by a funeral service with military honors at 6:30 PM at the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard. Family and friends are invited to come together to honor and celebrate the life of Jay, a man who will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
The family suggests any memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in memory of Jay and his patriotic devotion to his country.
Jay's family would like to extend their gratitude to all the healthcare workers who have treated him throughout the years for their excellent care and compassion.
