James F. Aikens Sr. of Abington Massachusetts, passed away on May 20, 2024 at Brookdale Assisted Living in West Hartford CT. Jim was born at home in East Weymouth, and grew up in North Weymouth, before moving to Abington in 1954.
He is pre-deceased by his wife of 68 years, Barbara E. (Sheppard) Aikens, his parents, Walter J. Aikens and Effie (Fraser) Aikens, as well as his brother, Walter Aikens, and sisters Barbara Sheppard and Jean Aikens. He is survived by his children and their spouses: James F. Aikens Jr. (April), Donna L. Reed (John), and David M. Aikens (Dana Takaki), seven grandchildren: Benjamin Reed, Kayla Reed, Andrew Reed, Brittany Aikens, Nick Takaki, Rachel Aikens and Tanner Aikens, and one great grandchild, Mason Lourenco. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jim graduated from Weymouth Vocational High School and served in the U.S. Army. Upon leaving the service, he founded and operated J. F. Aikens & Co., Builders. Later he was employed for many years as the Deputy Building Inspector of the town of Weymouth. He was an active volunteer in Abington throughout his life, including serving as the chairman of the Abington Zoning Board of Appeals. For a number of years he was Chapter Dad of Manamooskeagin Chapter, Order of DeMolay. Jim enjoyed reading, music and was a gifted carpenter and cabinet-maker.
