Vants Leonard Cummings was born in Waterbury, CT on November 4, 1954, the son of Alberta Cummings-Perry and Lynn Chapman. He was the oldest of three siblings.
Vants attended and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School where he played on the basketball team. Vants began studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses in his twenties. He took a firm stand for Jehovah and was baptized in 1978. Shortly after, Vants entered full time service as a pioneer and was later accepted to Brooklyn Bethel where he served for about 3 years in the binding department and as a machinist.
In 1986 Vants married Jacqueline (Craig) Cummings. Five years later they welcomed their one and only child, Vaughn Cummings on September 17, 1991. Vants worked for hospital systems including Hartford Healthcare for many years, in patient access and as a team leader.
On October 31, 2011 Vants became a Pop Pop when he welcomed his granddaughter, Natalie Cummings. His second grandchild Nathaniel Cummings was born on March 16, 2014. Vants loved his family. His family was always encouraged to come over for family worship. His home was the perfect place to stop by for his famous Mickey Mouse pancakes or for a BBQ. Vants loved to cook and always made the most delicious and beautiful meals.
Vants was known as the man behind the camera and loved taking pictures of his friends and family. He will be remembered for his sharp outfits and dapper style. He loved watching sports and would often watch several games at once. His favorite sports to watch were basketball, football, baseball and tennis. Vants loved Jazz and R&B music, and worked as a DJ in his younger years.
Vants will be remembered for his gentle and laid back nature. He was a devoted servant of Jehovah and loved his spiritual family. He is predeceased by his parents Alberta and Lynn as well as his brother Melvin Cummings. He is survived by his brother Mark Cummings, his sister-in- law Patricia Gray, his son Vaughn and his 2 grandchildren. As well as a host of nieces and nephews including Isa (Zeb), Mark, Genevieve, Amara, Chelsea, Tuesday, Erica and Lavina and all those who affectionately referred to him as Uncle Vants.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the South Hartford Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for their outpouring of love and support as well as the Neuro Oncology team at Hartford Hospital and the Avery Heights staff and community.
