James L. Alpers
Died February 11, 2025
SUTTONS BAY – James Leroy Alpers, 75, of Suttons Bay, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
James was born on January 31, 1950, in Traverse City, the son of Henry and Lucy (Belanger) Alpers. On June 1, 1974, at St. Michael's Parish in Suttons Bay, he married Shirley (Korson) Alpers, who survives.
A proud veteran, James served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973, during which time he formed a lifelong friendship with Rick Flora. His strong sense of service continued when he joined Suttons Bay– Bingham Fire & Rescue, where he served as an EMT for 22 years, including several years as rescue chief.
James had a natural gift for mechanics and ingenuity. He restored his father's Model A and could fix anything with moving parts. His creative mind led him to design and fabricate a cherry shaker, wood splitter, hops machine, and grapevine planter-each built from scratch. He was always up for a challenge, often tackling mechanical problems with his good friend Jim Niessink.
James and Shirley owned and operated a successful raspberry farm for more than 22 years, offering both "U-pick" and "We-pick" options to the community. He was an avid outdoorsman, an expert mushroom hunter who could spot morels from a mile away, and a passionate fisherman and hunter. Known for his sharp wit and love of practical jokes, James had a way of bringing laughter to those around him.
His friendships meant the world to him, and he cherished the bonds he shared with many, including his longtime friend Thad Tomlinson.
James is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Shirley; his children, Joseph (Jen) Alpers, Julie (Nick) Preneta, and Jennifer (Gerald) Smith; his grandchildren, Holden and Elsa Preneta; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Carl and Kneale Alpers.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, at St. Wenceslaus Parish, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Father Michael Class will serve as celebrant. A burial at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery will be announced in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Suttons Bay–Bingham Fire and Rescue, PO Box 280, Suttons Bay, MI 49682, and/or St. Wenceslaus Church, 8500 E. Kolarik Road, Suttons Bay, MI 49682.
