With heavy hearts but joyful memories, we announce the passing of James Estil Atchison Jr., a beloved husband, father, and friend, who left this world on October 12, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on September 14, 1950, in Grove Hill, James lived his life with an unwavering spirit and an infectious positivity that touched everyone he met.
James found his passion on the open road as a dedicated truck driver, exploring the vastness of the continental United States, including Alaska, and even making journeys into Canada. His love for driving embodied his adventurous nature, and he never met a stranger along the way.
A devoted family man, James cherished his time at home which he spent with his family. He was known for his love of University of Alabama football - a true fan through and through! In quieter moments, James found joy in playing with his beloved cats and spending quality time with those he loved.
James's faith was an important aspect of his life, and he attended Walker Springs Road Baptist Church, finding community and strength within its walls. His upbeat demeanor and kind heart will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will be celebrated by all who knew him.
James is survived by his wife of 25 years, Louise "LouLou" Atchison; daughter, Kim King (Danny); step-children, Cathy Boyd (Ed), and Christopher Busby (Joy); grandchildren, Christopher S. Busby, Cali Busby, Anna Boyd, Spencer Johnson, William King, Victoria Sutton, Andrew King, and Isabella King; sister, Diane Atchison Beck (Carl), as well as numerous nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Estil & Ruth Atchison.
Funeral services will be held at Lathan Funeral Home, Jackson on October 16, 2025, with visitation open to the public starting at 10:00 AM, followed by the service at 11:00 AM with Bro. David Webb officiating. After the ceremony, James will take his final journey by 18-wheeler driven by his step-son Chris Busby and will be laid to rest in New Leroy Baptist Cemetery, where he can forever rest in peace.
Pallbearers will be Jason Dixon, Andrew King, Lee Lamont, Ed Boyd, Scotty Brooks, and Jerry Bradley.
