Dr. James Franklin Barwick (Jim) passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on the shores of the Pamlico River in Washington, NC at Griffins Beach on Griffins Beach Road on Sunday, September 28 at 1:30 PM.

Born on November 26, 1944 in Tick Bite, NC to the late Sam and Glen Barwick, Jim enjoyed being raised on the family farm alongside his three brothers: Gene, John, and Allen. A strong work ethic and dedication to family was instilled in him throughout his adolescence. While attending Contentnea School, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, he had many accomplishments including class president, homecoming king, three sport letterman and Morehead Scholar finalist. From there, Jim pursued his undergraduate degree at NC State University and then went on to complete his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. It was during this time that Jim met and married Diana Hodges of Greenville, NC. The couple soon welcomed their first child, Hope Hodges Barwick. Following graduation he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Del Rio, Texas.

After serving in the Air Force for several years, the family settled in Greenville, NC and Jim opened a veterinary practice. Extremely dedicated to his patients, it was not unusual for Jim to bring a dog or cat home overnight in order to closely monitor their condition. This love of animals was passed on to his entire family as they witnessed his compassion and care.

The family soon expanded to include a son, James Franklin Barwick, Jr., whom they nicknamed, Jeff. Father and son shared a passion for the outdoors and for fellowship with friends. Some of their fondest memories were made duck hunting and fishing in Hyde County. Jim loved his children dearly and he raised them with integrity and compassion. Firmly rooted in faith, Jim loved Jesus and was a witness to his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by brothers, John & Gene Barwick;

He is survived by his brother, Allen Barwick of Raleigh, NC;

Daughter, Hope Barwick of Washington, NC and her children, Cooper and Kyler Tate;

Son, Jeff (Kathryn) Barwick of Washington, NC and their children Mary Gretchen, Sammy, Cord, and Georgia Hayes Barwick.
