I'm almost in tears seeing this obituary. I used to teach at Emma Havens but never knew James. Now I'm writing a book and am including a section about the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians. I will have a picture of the monument James and his 5th-grade class erected in their memory and the words engraved on it. I love this man just because of what he did here. I left Brick about 40 years ago and returned 4 years ago. If anyone in James's family happens to see this, I would appreciate a phone call or email. My phone number is 814-515-3809 and my email is [email protected]. I'm sorry for your loss. After all these years of never knowing anything about him, he has touched my heart. Thank you.

Today I had to trek to Pt. Pleasant to see my doctor. On the way back I stopped at Forge Pond in Bricktown, which is literally a small driveway off of Route 70 West. Look for it or you will miss it. On the other side of Route 70 East bound is the Metedeconk River and D & R Boat World. If you are kayaking on Forge Pond you have to go under the highway to get to the other side. First stop, which is supposedly old Indian stomping grounds. I wonder if anyone ever found a relic? Well I looked, just happen to hit it at low tide. I wouldn't know what to look for really.... but the place is relaxing and beautiful hidden among the race of the cares and the overdelvoped highway.
" Summer Meeting place of the Lenni Lenape Indians. Here they met to fish in the Metedeconk and paint pottery . Near the site was the Indian stage scene of rites, rituals and ceremonial dances. "

I had to look for "Mr. Brosius," and stumbled upon this site. What wonderful tributes so many gave to this special man. I wish I could have known him and talked to him. He is forever memorialized by his wonderful gift at Forge Pond. That amazing monument. Rest in peace friend. I hope I get to meet you someday in heaven. Save me a seat at our Father's table will ya?
Sincerely,

I was planning to head back over to New Jersey from Pennsylvania, where I now live, to pay Mr. Brosius a visit. I recently located my copy of "Home is the Battlefield," with the idea of bringing that and the report which I prepared after our 5th grade trip to Williamsburg and Jamestown in March 1974 to show him. How sad was I, upon phoning my brother (who is still in Brick) for confirmation that Mr. Brosius was still living there, to hear that he had recently died. I last saw him in August 1988, when a friend and I paid a surprise visit to him at Drum Point. That's when he signed my book, writing "Best wishes and good memories of Drum Point and fifth grade. Mr. Bro."

While I am likely able to name every teacher I had while a student a Drum Point Elementary School, it's Mr. Brosius whom I remember with the greatest fondness. Learning to multiply, playing softball during recess, a trip to a Phillies game, visiting Valley Forge (still have my photos from that trip, too) and Jamestown/Williamsburg (including the 5th grade play before we went) -- these are all pleasant memories for me. He made a positive impression and was a good man, dedicated to the betterment of his students while still providing his class with some fun time (I recall playing the Mad Libs word game as a class with Mr. Bro filling in the the blanks with nouns and adjectives on the blackboard as the class provided them).

You have, James R. Brosius, left me and many other students with "good memories of Drum Point and fifth grade." For that I thank you. For your passing I mourn. I hope that you had Christ as your Savior because I really, really want to see you again in heaven and thank you (again) personally.

I was so sorry to hear of my Uncle Jim's passing. I remember all the visits to his mother-my great- grandmother Lu and the old gang singing around the piano when she played. All the gang would gather in the kitchen for Lu's inimitable "mackerel gravy" breakfasts. What an era! What I would not give to go back to those days in the small town of Frackville and a simpler life of extended family and friends. I am grateful to have experienced this. My Uncle Jimmy was a great guy-kind and full of good humor and life. I remember his laugh still. My mother Betty and her sister Phyllis were raised in the same household with Jim during the Depression and I remember her relating stories from those times. She loved my Uncle Jim. Sadly, people move and grow apart, contact dwindles as life becomes more complicated and times change. One thing that does not change is remembering the great people Jim and Theresa were, and remembering their laugh and zest for people and life. May I see them again when I leave this earth. My condolences to Angela and family, for the passing of her parents and brother.

In 1975 I was lucky enough to get a very good teacher for my last year of grade school. His interestand passionfor American history, influenced all of his students. We put on a version of the play "1776" that year that made lasting memories for many of us. I can still recall some of my lines as Rep. Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island. That interest in history shaped a lot of what I do today.

He said we should call him on the 4th of July, just to say "hi" after school ended that year. So I did. And for the last 39 years, we would catch up every 4th.

Here's to you, James Brosius. Peace be with you, thanks for being the teacher you were, and a friend as well.

Mr. Brosius. You were and always will be my favorite teacher. I remember how passionate you were about the lenape indians and how you got the class to be enthusiastic about learning history. I remember all the fundraising that we did (which was fun and rewarding). I also remember that the class went over to the Laurelton Diner and had a picture taken for the Ocean County Observer in front of the monument.

Thank you for being a great teacher.

RIP

Jim was my teacher in '78. I was so happy when I heard he was going to be my teacher in 5th grade, even then his reputation proceeded him. He helped to foster my love of writing. Each week he would read to us a chapter from his book though it was still years from being published. (So glad it finally was) He had us build of model replica of Williamsburg before visiting it. At recess he would be outside with us playing, an Eagle knitted cap proudly on his head. He set the ideal of what teachers should be.
He was the best teacher I ever had and will be missed.

Wow Mr Brosius what a great man! I have great memories of him and our 5th grade class 1969. We raised money and put up a small stone commemorating the Lenni Lenape Indians campground by Forge Pond I believe its still there. He even came to my house when I broke my leg wrestling in high school to cheer me up. He made going to school a pleasure. He will truly be missed. My condolences and love to his family.

We are thinking about you at this time Angela and all the loss you've had to endure lately.I never had the privilege of having your father as a teacher, but the outpouring of love, respect and admiration from his former students has reinforced what I've always thought of him. We hope that the memories of how special your family is helps to ease your grief.

The world has lost one great man. The best teacher I've ever had in my life. I can't even remember how many times I have told someone, sometimes a complete stranger, about my incredible 5th grade teacher and how he instilled in me this absolute passion for history and especially all things Revolutionary War! Rest in peace, Mr. Brosius and rest assured you have made a huge impact on so many who were fortunate enough to have you as their teacher or friend... My prayers to God for comfort and strength to Angela and the rest of his wonderful family. Love you, and you will be greatly missed, Mr B!

Though I only knew Mr. B for a few years, he was a sweet and funny man that I thoroughly enjoyed being around. He was an intelligent and kind man full of love for his wife and family. May he be at peace and rest with his wife and son. I hope and pray his family and those who were blessed to have known him find strength in the memories they shared with him.

I only got the privilege to be with you only a few short times. The most recent, my stay at your house in October. My only regret... I wish I knew you longer. I am in education and the outpouring of support from your past students is what should drive every teacher to want to continue teaching. I am truly amazed and humbled. It shows you dont need money or power to influence people - just compassion and huge heart. I will forever cherish my copy of your book that you signed for me pops & will forever remember the warmth of your home. Please Tell jim & Teresa we all say hi and miss you all very much. Til we meet again.

James Brosius was simply one in a million and I was so fortunate to be his student over 40 years ago. His passion for history was so contagious. I still sing the songs from 1776 that he played in class. He introduced me to the poems of Robert Frost, and to this day I cherish the book of Frost poems he gave to me at the end of the school year. What a truly remarkable man who inspired and touched the lives of so many.

That One Teacher - We have all had "that one teacher" who gets it; "that one teacher" who changes us; "that one teacher" who makes learning an amazing life-long journey. For me (and many others, no doubt) that "one teacher" was my 5th grade teacher Mr. Brosius. His name was amongst the first that came up during our 20th HS Reunion this fall. He was someone who did "writer's workshop" before it was considered best practice (and was a published author himself), he engaged us in theater and the arts, and took the time to interact and support me during the most challenging times in my life. This week's edition of The Curriculum Corner (my weekly newsletter to the teachers I work with) will be a narrative dedicated to his legacy. To quote Henry B. Adams: A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Mr. Brosius, your influence goes on to touch every student I work with & in the lives of all your students throughout the years.

Like so many others, Mr Brosius was the one teacher who had the most positive effect on me. He was so encouraging, warm and funny. I can still see his big smile and hear his kind voice fifty years later. We were all so lucky to have known him, making our fifth grade very special.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Brosius' passing. He made 5th grade memorable...puppet shows with class-made life-size puppets, a play, Home is the Battlefield, his love for the Revolutionary War...what an awesome teacher and man! My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I am so sad to hear of Mr. Brosius passing. I want his family to know from the bottom of my heart what a great man he was. He was my fifth grade teacher, and he made the Revolutionary War and the founding of our country come alive. Everything I know about it to this day, I've learned from Mr. Brosius. I am a teacher and have always sought to exemplify his evident love for the subject at hand, his students, and learning. The movie 1776 came out while I had Mr. Brosius for 5th grade, and I will never forget the Monday morning after he saw the movie. He sat on the edge of his desk and gave us a summary. He was beaming. He had a contagious enthusiasm when he taught. I do my best to do the same. There are good men, and there are great men. Mr. Brosius was a great man.

I am deeply saddened at the passing of Mr. B. In a very short time we've lost first the son, my friend Jimmy and now his dad. Both will be sorely missed. I still remember fondly holidays spent at the Brosius house, for some of H.S. kids it was a haven. His presence at our wrestling matches always gave us hope of a victory. I still have an autographed copy of his book that I cherish deeply. My prayers to Angela during this difficult time.
