James Bunn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter-Allen-Myhand on Jan. 4, 2026.
Mr. James Walter "Butch" Bunn, age 73, of LaGrange, passed away on January 3, 2026. Butch was born on January 1, 1953, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Raymond Lee "Bo" Bunn and Annie Lois Grimes Bunn.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bobbie Davis (Billy); a brother, Douglas Beech; a niece, Kathy; a great-grandchild, Kylie Beth; and his stepfather, Bill Woodham.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Jo Ann Looney Bunn; children, Josh Bunn (Cristy) and Monica Bunn, Rev. Steve Johnson (Becky), Paula Johnson (Brian), and Tim Johnson; twelve grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings, Nettie Phillips, Bettie Richmond, Tony Bunn, and Lynn Rooks; a special niece, Donna Furrow; and other nieces and nephews.

Butch was a 21-year veteran of the Troup County Sheriff's Department, from which he retired after years of dedicated service.

He was a passionately devoted fan of the University of Alabama, especially football-Roll Tide! Many knew him simply as Butch, while others affectionately called him "Bama Bunn." He was also an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves.

Butch was of the Baptist faith and was attending Dunson Baptist Church. He never met a stranger and was always there to support his family and friends. When his health allowed, he especially enjoyed doing yard work and took pride in keeping things just right.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Baptist Tabernacle Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., with the memorial service beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Rev. Mike Hornsby and Rev. Kenneth Cole will officiate.

Well old friend. I am so sad to see you go, but at least now you feel no more pain. The one thing that will stick with me until we meet again. Is when you saw that big old black snake easing through my back yard and just had to call me to come that way and I walked up on it. That was my very first attempt at River Dancing whilst screaming like a banchee. lol You will be sorely missed old friend.
