James Lawrence "Jimmy" Childs, age 79, passed away early Wednesday morning, November 19, 2025, at his home in Batesville, MS.

The funeral service will be 3:00 P.M. Sunday, November 23, 2025, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells funeral Home with the interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville, MS. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to North Delta School, 330 Greenwave Lane, Batesville, MS 38606.

James Lawrence "Jimmy" Childs was born on June 30, 1946, in Oxford, Mississippi to the late James Lawrence Childs, Sr. and the late Lillian Johnson Childs. He leaves behind a legacy filled with dedication, service, and a deep love for his family and community.

Jimmy began his professional journey with HJ Riverside in Clarksdale, MS, and later joined Panola Farmers Service in Batesville, MS, where he made significant contributions until his departure. Subsequently, he became an integral part of Huron Smith Oil Company in Batesville, MS, eventually rising to the esteemed position of vice-president/controller until his retirement. His career was marked by a commitment to excellence and a steadfast work ethic that inspired many around him.

In addition to his professional achievements, Jimmy honorably served in the Mississippi National Guard, which reflected his strong sense of duty and patriotism. His education included earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi, further laying the foundation for his successful career.

Outside of work, Jimmy was known for his unwavering support of North Delta School's football program, dedicating nearly 30 years to running the chains on Friday nights. His passion for sports extended to being a devoted Ole Miss Rebel fan and an avid tennis player, showcasing his love for both competition and camaraderie.

Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah Nelson Childs of Batesville, MS; his daughter, Chesley Childs Williams of Dallas, TX; and his son, Brett Childs (Amy) of Batesville, MS. He was a proud grandfather to three grandchildren: Kaitlyn Nicole Childs, Bristol Laken Childs, and Lawrence Baylor Childs, who will remember him for his warmth and encouragement in all their endeavors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lawrence Childs and Lillian Johnson Childs, whose love and guidance shaped the man he became.

Jimmy Childs lived a life rich in experiences, characterized by service to his community and unwavering love for his family. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
