James Frank Claiborne III

With hearts both heavy and full of gratitude, we celebrate the extraordinary life of James Frank Claiborne III-Frank to all who knew and loved him. A man of unwavering devotion, infectious humor, and quiet strength, Frank departed this world peacefully on May 28, 2025 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, leaving behind a tapestry of love, service, and cherished memories that will forever warm the hearts of his family and friends.
Born on October 20, 1941, in the close-knit community of Altus, Oklahoma, Frank was the son of James Frank and Ruby Alyne Stephens Claiborne. He grew up surrounded by the love of his siblings-Billy, Linda, and Carol -forging bonds that would anchor him throughout his life. After earning his degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1965, he answered the call of duty, embarking on a distinguished military career in the United States Air Force. Serving as a B-52 navigator-bombardier during the Vietnam War, he served with courage and precision, later being stationed across the country and the world-from Tampa to Sacramento, Spokane to Altus-before retiring with honor with the rank of Major.
Frank's service to others extended far beyond his military years. Whether behind the wheel as a truck driver, contributing to SMX in Iowa, or leading as the director of SOAR in Altus, he approached every role with dedication and integrity. His commitment to community shone brightly through his longtime service on the Red River Federal Credit Union board of directors, where he helped shape opportunities for countless families.
At the heart of Frank's story was his love for his family. On October 25, 1959, he married his beloved Anita Trent, and together they built a life rich in adventure and devotion. They raised three sons-Mike (deceased, survived by Lisa), Russ (Linda), and David (Erin)-and reveled in the joy of watching their family grow to include grandchildren Caitlen, A.J., Mark, Sydney, and Emma, as well as great-grandson Michael and soon-to-arrive Finn.
Frank lived with a spirit of enthusiasm and joy. He found delight in bowling with friends, camping beneath vast Oklahoma skies, skiing across water and snow, and embarking on sunlit cruises with his loved ones. A natural raconteur, he could captivate any room with his quick wit and colorful tales, leaving laughter echoing in his wake. His kindness was a quiet force, his presence a gift.
Though he has taken his final flight, Frank's legacy endures-in the laughter of his grandchildren, the stories passed down through generations, and the unbreakable bonds of the family he cherished. He taught us the value of service, the power of humor, and the beauty of a life well lived.
James is preceded in death by his parents; brother Billy Claiborne; son Mike Claiborne.
Left to honor his life include wife Anita Claiborne; sister Linda McKnight and husband John of Miami, Florida, Carol Steen and husband Ricky of Altus, Oklahoma; sons William Russell Claiborne and Wendy of Putman, Connecticut, David Claiborne and wife Erin of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law Lisa; grandchildren, Caitlen, A.J. Mark, Sydney, and Emma; great-grandsons Michael and Finn who is on the way.
My mind still talks to you. My heart still looks for you, but my soul knows you are at peace. Grief is odd. Like yesterday I looked at your picture and smiled. Today I cried, I miss you every single day.
A memorial service to honor Frank's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2025 at Lowell - Tims Funeral Home Chapel, Altus, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to Lowell - Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
