James Confer Obituary
James "Jim" Edward Confer, born on May 18, 1971, in Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025, in Newport News at the age of 53. Jim's life was a tapestry woven with vibrant threads of the outdoors, music, his faith and love for family.
Jim's journey began in Mechanicsburg, PA but spent most of his childhood in Maine, where he discovered his immense love for the outdoors that would follow him throughout his life. As a consultant for business programs for $1 million plus companies, he applied the discipline and leadership skills honed during his service in the U.S. Army, from which he was honorably discharged. His professional achievements stand testament to his dedication and work ethic-qualities that inspired many.
Away from his desk, Jim found solace and joy in nature. An avid camper and bushcrafter, he embraced the outdoors with enthusiasm. Whether it was grilling, hiking, or transforming landscapes with his love for gardening, hardscaping, and landscaping, Jim brought his unique touch to everything he did.
Music was another of Jim's lifelong passions. As a talented guitarist and lead singer, he enlivened local stages with his covers of 80's and 90's classics, leaving audiences energized and inspired. He was also an ardent reader, mostly reading books on personal growth and his walk with God.
He enjoyed the fellowship at Peninsula Community Chapel. Jim lived his faith through his actions, kindness, and community involvement. Though preceded in death by his father, James Confer; Aunt, Pamela York; Uncle, Keith Hall; and his Great- Aunt Marie Hutchison, Jim leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward his legacy: his devoted parents, Don and Nancy Hanson; his beloved son, Derek Lemont; his beloved daughters, Katherine Steinbruegge (Marc), Elizabeth Confer (Sam), and Allison Confer; his brother Raymond Confer (Debbi); his niece Sierra and nephew Joshua, and his best friend, Marie Phillips.
