James "Jim" P. Cooney, 70, passed away unexpectedly off the coast of Gloucester on October 22, 2022. Jim was the beloved husband of Barbara A. Skane with whom he shared 37 years of marriage. Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late James P. and Anne (Lehtinen) Cooney.
In addition to his wife Barbara, Jim is survived by his son, Jeffrey J. Cooney of Beverly; daughter, Lisa Schofield of Beverly and her two daughters, Olivia and Victoria.
Jim graduated in 1990 from Northeastern University in Boston with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology, cum laude degree and went on to experience a full career in the field of computer technology, communications, and sales. Starting at Emulex, Jim qualified for the "circle of excellence" club for 8 consecutive years, then moved on to Netplane Systems, Motorola, and most recently ENEA where he retired as Director of Sales And Business Development, The Americas.
Jim had a love of nature and found joy feeding the birds watching them as they swooped in for a bath or milled around the feeders. He had just learned how to operate a drone without landing in a tree and had taken his new inflatable kayak paddling on the Essex River. Jim loved to talk, laugh, and try out the latest gadgets but his big passion was scuba diving. With extensive experience gained over years of diving, Jim achieved Dive Master status and excelled at deep water technical diving. Nothing gave him more pleasure than diving the Saturday Night Ledge or the limestone caves of northern Florida. Jim was also a member of the National Association for Cave Diving.
Jim had deep affection for his cats. Fur babies Pumpkin, Lily, Holly, Kenzo and Sasha returned that affection every day.
Funeral services will be held privately. Memorial gift contributions may be made in his name to the Trustees of Reservations who support efforts to protect and preserve the irreplaceable landscapes and landmarks of Massachusetts. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. Information and condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com
