James Darrow Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Peterson & Patch Funeral Home on Dec. 14, 2025.
James Joseph Darrow, 88, of Waukegan, Illinois entered his eternal rest on December

11, 2025. He was born in 1937 in Waukegan, IL to Archibald Darrow and Josephine

(Stasior) Darrow. James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather

and friend. James was a parishioner of St. Dismas Catholic Church (Little Flower Parish)

for over 60 years.

He graduated from North Chicago High School in 1955. James was a proud veteran

having served in the Army from 1960 – 1963 including being stationed overseas in

Germany. He worked for the North Shore Gas Company in Waukegan, IL for 36 years as

a meter reader and supervisor.

James married his beloved wife, Annabelle (Hribar) Darrow, in 1961 and together they

raised three children, instilling in them the values of hard work, love, and learning.

Dad was the most kind and generous person you could meet. He would offer a friendly

smile and if you found yourself providing him help you would receive an earnest, "thank

you." Even mail carriers, trash collectors and delivery drivers would be greeted with a

warm smile and a can of soda or a tip.

His happy places included the beach, his backyard garden, family gatherings watching

Chicago and U of I sports teams, any lake he could fish in, and the rec center track or

any cross-country path he could run on.

Jim's family tree traces back to the early pioneers of Lake County, IL; the Darrow family

settled in the county in 1844.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, Annabelle, he is survived by his children: Michael

(Mary) Darrow of Indian Lakes Estates, FL, Joseph (Sherrie) Darrow of Claremont, CA,

and Susan (Anthony) Shaw of Fishers, IN; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Arlene White.

A memorial service will be planned at a future date with internment at Ascension

Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum in Libertyville.

Mr. Darrow has been part of my life since 1970, when we moved across the street. He was the kindest person on the block, never yelled at us if we rode our bikes on the corner of his lawn.
You would always see him doing his morning run every day. He would come across the street and to talk to my mother, who´s dementia was starting to develop in her brain, he would answer all her questions....over and over again.
He was a tremendous help to us throughout the years, with our garbage cans, bring us fresh tomatoes from his garden.
I´m going to miss our daily waves or smiles.

Jim was a wonderful friend who will be greatly missed!
Jim and I were a part of a group that met at McDonald´s for coffee. We always kidded him about catching the biggest fish in Lake Michigan, and he always laughed at our not-so-funny jokes.
I will be keeping Annabelle and his family in my prayers. She was the love of his life and he was so proud of his family!
I hope to be reunited with Jim someday in the peace of Heaven.

Jim was a wonderful guy always wearing a big smile. His pleasant smile filled the room no matter where he was. So sorry to hear of this. God bless him.
