James Edgar Ernst, 89, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on June 23, 2024, while residing in Lebanon, Ohio.

Jim was born in Cincinnati in 1935 to Edgar and Berneda Ernst. He attended Lockland High School and later earned a B.S. in Agriculture from The Ohio State University. After serving in the United States Army, Jim returned to Ohio, where he worked for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in the Division of Land and Soil for 30 years, retiring in 1988.

In 1957, Jim married Carol Lee (Bohrer), and together they built a life full of love and adventure. While they traveled extensively, Jim and Carol especially cherished their winters in Florida and time spent at their lake cottage on Lake Cumberland, Kentucky.

In 1961, they welcomed their son, Robert. Jim valued family time and shared his love for the outdoors with Bob, enjoying fishing, camping, and hunting together. Jim was incredibly proud to stand by Bob's side at his medical school graduation and later at his wedding to Terry, moments that reflected the strength of their bond.

After retiring, Jim’s life was further enriched with the birth of his grandchildren, Mary and Will. He and Carol played an active role in their upbringing, helping with daily tasks like grocery shopping and yard work, and creating cherished memories through trips to the zoo and their beloved Lake Cumberland. Jim adored being a "G" to his grandchildren, and more recently, he took great joy in becoming a great-grandfather to Leah earlier this year.

Known for his sharp sense of humor, Jim will also be remembered as a talented gardener, handyman, and woodworker. Whether tending to his yard, fixing things around the house, or restoring antique furniture, Jim found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. His neighbors and friends will fondly recall his generosity and craftsmanship.

Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He touched the lives of those around him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Berneda Ernst. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Ernst; his son, Bob Ernst, and Bob's wife, Terry; his granddaughter, Mary Miller, and her husband, Brandon, along with their daughter, Leah; and his grandson, Will Ernst and his fiancé, Annie.

A memorial service will be held on October 19, 2024, at Otterbein Senior Life - Lebanon (585 N. St. Route 741, Lebanon, OH 45036) in the chapel at 11 a.m. Donations in Jim's honor can be made to Hospice of Cincinnati or Otterbein's Veterans Memorial.
