James "Jim" E. Farris, 75, of
Marion, IL, died peacefully at 6:40 p.m. on July 24, 2025 at the CLC at the Marion VA. His passing was attended by the family and hospice staff.
Jim was born on November 22, 1949 in Joliet, IL to Merle and Mildred Lucille (Dean) Farris. Jim was their first born and became a big brother to Eugene and Loren. His childhood was spent in Joliet, Metropolis, and Marion. Jim graduated from Marion High School in 1969 and as he use to say "I took my senior class trip to Vietnam." He spent seven years in the Marine Corp and was honorably discharged in July of 1976. Jim was always extremely proud of his service in the Corp, Semper Fi!
Jim's working career began at the Marion Federal Prison. After 23 years, he retired from the prison and worked part time at Pavillion, ALPHA Coal Cars, and Sam's Club. He particularly enjoyed working at Sam's where he gave away free samples and used his gift of gab to talk to the customers.
Jim married Shelley Lambert and they had three children, Scott, Jeff, and Crystal. Shelley passed away in 2008. He then married Linda Oliver and later married Nancy Johnson.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nancy; brother, Eugene (Cheryl); children, Scott, Jeff, and Crystal (James); grandchildren, Erin, Mitchell, Skyler, Alexis, Ariel (Dustin), Jeffery (Hannah), Mason, Brinley, Kameron, and Kaylen; great grandchildren, Silas, Sarah, Mark, and Xander; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, first wife, Shelley; and infant great-granddaughters, Alexis, and Crystal Lou.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street,
Marion, IL.
A hero's homecoming service was held at the Marion V.A. Medical Center on July 25, 2025. A private service will be held at a later date at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home with inurnment in Mound City National Cemetery.
The Farris clan would like to offer a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and support staff at the Marion V.A. – CLC. Their professionalism, knowledge, and personal compassion helped Jim feel comfortable and safe in his final days. Their kindness and concern for his family during many difficult moments were most appreciated and will always remain as positive memories.
For those who prefer, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the "Community Living Center" of the Marion V.A. Medical Center. Contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home or may be mailed c/o Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street,
