James Lewis Franklin-known to many as Dad, Coach, Pastor, and friend-passed away suddenly from heart failure in Lumberton, North Carolina, surrounded by the love of his family. His wife, Nancy, and children, John and Amanda, were by his side.

James was born on October 3, 1936, in the small farming town of Peck, Michigan, to Lewis and Pheobe Franklin. He was an only child. His father owned a dairy farm, and his mother served as the town librarian-roles that instilled in James a lifelong love of hard work, community, and learning.

He pursued his calling in both education and ministry, earning degrees from Mount Carmel Bible Institute in Indiana, Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky, and a master's in education from Eastern Michigan University.

Over the years, James wore many hats-janitor, bus driver, teacher, coach, counselor, principal, and superintendent. Of all his roles, teaching, coaching, and counseling were closest to his heart. Later in life, after retiring from education, James continued his life of service as a pastor, leading and supporting congregations with deep care and compassion. In every role, he touched countless lives with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith.

James is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Nancy Franklin, of Lumberton, NC; daughter Amanda Franklin, also of Lumberton; son John Franklin and his wife Carla, of Lumberton; grandson Tyler Franklin and his wife Meagan, of Little River, SC; and grandson Trevor Franklin and his wife Claudia, of Wilmington, NC.

James had a deep love for animals, especially draft horses, and spent time giving carriage tours on Mackinac Island and sleigh and hayrides in the countryside. He cherished visits with his Amish friends in Indiana and found great joy in sharing meals-whether out at a favorite restaurant or enjoying Nancy's home-cooked meals.

Those who knew James will remember his restless spirit and zest for life. He was always on the go, ready for the next adventure. He had a great sense of humor, a generous heart, and a deep love for people-and they loved him right back. He especially loved Mackinac Island, Michigan, a place that held many fond memories.

Above all, James loved God and lived a life rooted in faith. His passing, though sudden, was peaceful-a blessing that spared him the suffering he never wanted. He knew he was loved, and he left this world knowing he would be missed.

James leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, and love that will live on in all who know him.

In 1965 a one room school consolidated with Peck schools. I was in the 6th grade and Jim was my very first teacher at Peck. Later on he would become the Superintendent of Peck schools. More importantly he became a friend and helped guide me through my parents divorce. I look forward to seeing him again in heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with Nancy and family.

I remember Jim as a kind, fun-loving man. He and his family attended our church in Whittemore when I was in High School. A group of my friends and I made a trip one summer to visit him and Nancy while they were working on Mackinaw Island. All of the kids at school thought highly of him. He touched a lot of young lives. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your loss.
