James "Jim" Wayne Gilbert Jr., 64, of Salisbury, lost his 16-month courageous battle with ALS on January 13, 2023, at his home with this wife, Jaana by his side.
Born in Missouri, Jim was the son of the late James Odell Gilbert Sr. and the late Ruth Elaine (Laxton) Gilbert. He was the loving husband of Jaana K. (Paukkonen) Gilbert with whom he shared 21 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his daughters, Alexis Gilbert, and Brianna Gilbert. He also is survived by sister, Betty (Rollie) Loewen of IL, sister, Sandra (William) Ennis of IL, sister, Kaye (David) Sams of CO, and sister, Roxanna (late Robert) Rees. He was also proceeded in death by brother, Jackie Ray Laxton.
Jim retired as a Transport Driver from Hendrick Motorsports due to ALS. Jim spent 35 years as a team transport driver in the sport of NASCAR. From The Labonte Brothers to Joe Gibbs Racing, Red Bull Racing, Furniture Row Racing, and Hendrick Motorsports Jim was part of many wins and multiple championships. Jim was known by his friends and co-workers as a hard worker, as well as a gentle and humble soul. The family are appreciative of all the love and support given to them over the years.
The Celebration of Life will be held at Hendrick Motorsports Team Center, 4400 Papa Joe Hendrick Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28262 on Tuesday, January 24th at 5:30 PM officiated by MRO Chaplain Donnie Floyd. All friends of Jim are welcome, and dress is come as you are.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jim Gilbert Fund that is set as a college fund for Alexis and Brianna. Checks can be mailed to Motor Racing Outreach at 5555 Concord Pkwy S Suite 405 Concord, NC 28027 with a memo: Jim Gilbert Fund (Alexis & Brianna).
