James Gordon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Webb Funeral Home - Shelbyville on Mar. 11, 2026.
James Gilbert Gordon, 83, Shelbyville, died Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at his home. A native of Spencer County, he was the son of the late Ed and Edna Mae Bolin Gordon and grew up in the Spencer and Shelby Counties area. He was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sharpshooter (Rifle E-14) and two overseas ribbons. Following his military service, he went to work for the Shelby County Road Department, retiring after 35 years as a master mechanic.

"Papaw", as he was affectionately known to family and friends, enjoyed his family. His prized possession was his bar. Over the years, he built the ultimate man cave, where he spent many nights with a good Marlboro and a cold beer. His greatest enjoyment was having a cookout and spending time with his family and friends. You could also find him hunting, fishing or sitting on a wagon up at the farm watching the cows. In his younger years, a night out on the town and a good bucket of fried chicken was like winning the lottery. He was a great Man and Father, a dedicated Grandfather and jack of all trades. He was always there to lend an ear or help you in any way he could. He held his Family in the highest regard, often saying he was "The Richest man in the world because of them!" He was the type of Father and Grandfather everyone wanted to be around. Papaw was our Superman!

In addition to his parents, his daughter, Tammy Jean Gordon Moore; his sister, Joan Lefler; four brothers, Eddie B. Gordon, Vernon Gordon, Billy Paul Gordon and David Gordon and a great-grandson, Nathaniel Miller, preceded him in death.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 55 years, Brenda J. Gordon of Shelbyville; two sons, James "Jamie" Gordon, Jr. (Cheryl) of Mobile, AL and Albert Gordon of Shelbyville; two sisters, Betty Jaggers and Martha Ann Gordon, both of Shelbyville; a brother, Albert Turner (Susie) of Waddy; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, March 13 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 14 at Webb Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 14 at Webb Funeral Home. Rev. Dave Hamlin will officiate. Burial will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery with military honors.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Webb Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.webbfuneralhome.com.
