James Austin Grimes, Sr., age 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Clarksville, Indiana. Formerly of Henryville and Memphis, Indiana, he was born on May 29, 1939, in Big Ready, Kentucky, the son of the late Wilber and Edna (Nash) Grimes.
He worked for over 40 years at TubeTurns in Louisville, Kentucky as a press operator, dedicating much of his life to his craft. After retiring, he continued his work ethic as a service technician at Sellersburg Lumber for several years. No matter where he was, Austin was always the one fixing things around the house, working on his cars, or spending time enjoying his many hobbies, including woodworking, photography, and exploring new technologies.
Austin loved to travel and was fortunate enough to visit all 50 states. He especially cherished the winters spent in his motorhome with his wife, Debbie, in Florida, where they created countless beautiful memories together. His adventurous spirit and commitment to his family defined the way he lived his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Debbie (Moore) Grimes, and their children, Lisa Ralston (Chris) of Jeffersonville, Tara Townsend (Chris) of Washington, Georgia, Teri Thomas of Clarksville, Amy Speedy (Mitchell) of Jeffersonville, and James Austin Grimes, Jr. (Laura) of Evansville. He was a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren: Emma, Betsy, Avery, Lilly, Garston, Maddie, Henry, Evie, Landon, Lincoln, and Grayson, as well as a great-grandfather to his great-grandson, Caspian.
He is also survived by his brothers, Marshall (Mona) and John Grimes, both of Henryville, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family who will forever remember him with love.
Austin was preceded in death by his parents, Wilber and Edna Grimes; his sisters, Evelyn, Laverne, and infant Bonita Grimes, and his brothers, Alvin and Dallas Grimes. His family takes comfort in knowing he is reunited with his loved ones in eternity.
He will be remembered for his immense love for his family, his hardworking nature, and his humorous spirit. Austin leaves behind a legacy of kindness, perseverance, and adventure that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025 from 10:00am until 1:00pm at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, Indiana 47130. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 at the funeral home, followed by burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hosparus of Southern Indiana in memory of Austin.
