Pittsford, NY / Naples, FL: Passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his parents, Dr. George and Polly Growney; Brothers, John and George Growney; brother-in-law, Bill Meagher and his loving wife of 50 years, Kathleen. Survived by children, Jim Jr., and Julia Growney; grandchildren, Morgan & Connor Growney; his sister, Mary Pat Meagher and his partner Susan Turner; including much extended family. And of course all his dear friends from the Rochester & Naples community; at Oak Hill Country Club, St. John Fisher University, and Quail West Country Club.
Jim was a graduate of Nazareth Hall and the Lakemont Academy of Rochester, NY. Jim served in the U.S. Army where he was the Chief Pharmacist at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. After his Honorable Discharge from U. S Army he was employed at Xerox in the Machine Manufacturing Division. He attended and earned a B.A. in Economics from St. John Fisher (College) University in 1966.
Jim worked at RD Products, and a machine tool & die manufacturer. Jim found his passion & talent in sales and management. This is where Jim began his adventure into small businesses. Jim was co-founder and President to Paine Hospital Supply Company. After the sale of Paine Hospital Supply, Butler Service Group and GE Consulting Company.
In 1979, Jim joined Oak Hill Country Club & served on the Board of Governors including chairing the execution of many golf tournaments. In 1986, Jim founded the Rochester Business Classic Golf Tournament in support of the March of Dimes Foundation. Jim was an avid, passionate golfer and hosted many golf trips to Ireland with many family and friends.
In 1985, Jim founded & became CEO of C.P.U., Inc. CPU was a unique service providing contract computer consulting to those companies just understanding the need for Information Technology.
In 1994, Jim decided to sell C.P.U, Inc. and retire and spend his winters in the Quail West Golf Community in Naples, Florida, while continuing to visit Pittsford during the summer months. Jim served on various committees at Quail West including Chair of the Homeowners and Membership Council. In 2012, Jim joined the Medical Diplomats Council and the Banyan Society of the Naples Community Hospital. This led the gifting of the "Growney Pulmonary Rehabilitation Unit" serving the Naples community.
Throughout Jim's life, his love for St. John Fisher grew deeper. In 1990, he became an active Trustee at St. John Fisher University, where he served on the executive committee and chaired the 2000-2003 Capital Campaign. He was elected into the SJFU Sports Hall of Fame for his continued support of many sports programs that elevated the profile of the university. His dedication to the university resulted in SJFU naming the newly constructed stadium - Growney Stadium. This became even larger when SJFU signed a training camp contract with the Buffalo Bills Franchise. For over 20 years, Growney Stadium has been home for the Buffalo Bills Football Team.
Friends may call to the funeral chapel (2305 Monroe Avenue) Sunday, March 16th from 2-5 pm.
