James R. Halbig, 52 of Sandyston Twp., NJ passed away unexpectedly Sunday February 4, 2024, at the Morristown Medical Center. Born in Dover, NJ, James grew up in Denville and had traveled across the world with the United States Army for many years, settling in Sandyston Twp. four years ago. James was working as a Mechanic with Sussex County Rental Center in Andover, NJ.
A graduate of the Morris Knolls High School class of 1989, James entered the United States Army after graduation and proudly served multiple tours including Germany and the Middle East including Desert Storm. He retired from the Army with many accolades and commendations and served the National Guard for many years after. James stayed in touch with his Battle Buddies from his various duty stations during his military time.
A master mechanic, James was passionate about classic car restoration and with his family constantly working on a project vehicle such as his 1934 Ford Pickup. In addition to his love of cars, he was also an Eagles football enthusiast. For many years James and his family were regulars at Island Dragway. He had also served Andover Borough as a Volunteer Fireman.
Although proud of his military career and work as a mechanic, James was most proud of being a father to his three children.
James is survived in life by his beloved wife Rebecca, his daughters Cassidy and Addelyn Halbig, and his son Alexander James Halbig. Also surviving are his mother Kathy Zuzock, his sisters Melissa Halbig, Heidi Dempesy and her husband Bill, his brothers John Halbig Jr. and his wife Renee, and Bart Halbig and his companion Ashleigh Mallo as well as his many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father John D. Halbig Sr. in 2015.
Memorial visitation will be held Monday February 12, 2024, from 2-4 PM with memorial services beginning at 4 PM in the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home #156 Main Street (Rt. 206) Newton, NJ 07860.
