Daniel L. “Barber Dan” Halbig, 82, of Owensboro, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by all his family, Thursday, June 5, 2025 under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. He was born December 29, 1942 in Gibson County, Indiana to the late Oliver A. and Margaret Schmitt Halbig. Dan was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral and was retired from barbering having owned Dan’s Barber Shop in the former Lincoln Mall for many years. He also had worked at Green River Steel for 14 years. Dan sang in the Cathedral choir, sang in the funeral choir, volunteered taking communion to the sick and to people in nursing homes. In 2024, Dan received the Sophia Award for St. Stephen’s from the Diocese of Owensboro for life-long service. He enjoyed playing tennis and riding his bicycle. Dan had a great sense of humor and loved his family and friends. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jane Paul and a brother, Gene Halbig.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Sally Halbig; four children, Dwayne Halbig (Debra) of Lilburn, Georgia, Debbie Reed (Troy) of Hodgenville, Dale Halbig (Aleata) of Owensboro, and Randy Halbig (Christy) of Owensboro; nine grandchildren, Amanda, Brad, Sister Mary Jacinta, Zach, Matt, Sarah, Ben, Annie Kate, and Max; seven great grandchildren; his twin brother, David Halbig (Kathy) of Evansville and a sister, Carol Ann Kenney of Oakland, California; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be Noon Wednesday, June 11, at St. Stephen Cathedral with entombment following in Resurrection Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 3 PM until 7 PM Tuesday with prayers at 6:30 PM and from 10:30 AM until 11:30 AM Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
Memorial contributions may be made to Brescia University, St. Stephen Cathedral, or to St. Jude’s’s Children’s Research Hospital. Messages and condolences to the family can be shared at www.glenncares.com.
