With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of James Arthur Hardy on March 23, 2025, at the age of 91, surrounded by his children in his home. Jim was a treasured father, grandfather, and friend whose joyful smile and love for people touched everyone who knew him.

A Life of Curiosity and Service

Born on December 9, 1933, in Crosby, Minnesota, Jim was the son of his hero Gladys Hardy of Fifty Lakes, Minnesota, and his adoptive father, Delmer Longerbone.

A proud veteran, Jim served six years in the U.S. Air Force as a Ground Radio Operator. He was stationed with the 39th Air Rescue Squadron at JASDF Ashiya Air Base in Japan from 1953 to 1958 during the Korean War, earning the National Defense Service Medal.

Jim had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, diving into the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with zest. His full life was an accolade to his relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation.

Jim’s interests were as varied as they were remarkable. From ham radio and woodworking to studying astrophysics, theology, and paleontology, his curiosity knew no bounds. He found joy in music, mastering several instruments, and pursued practical skills in activities like gardening, quilting, aviation, and photography.

Jim, a polyglot and philologist, spoke and understood a wide array of languages which he used to connect with people all over the world. He dedicated many years to earn a doctorate in theology from Stanford University which he used to serve others and minister to Spanish-speaking communities.

A Diverse Family Man

Jim is survived by his children: Rose Marie Kroeger (Russell †), Terra Mae Hardy, Peggy Sue Clay (David), Jennifer Elaine Thurston (Terry), and Daniel James Hardy (Nadia); his siblings: Michael Longerbone (Karen) and Peggy Lake (James); as well as 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Thomas Longerbone (Barbara †), and his sister Sandra Lee DuPay.

A Celebration of Life

A viewing will be held on Friday, April 4th, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brenny Family Funeral Chapel in Pine River, Minnesota. A funeral service will take place at the same location on Saturday, April 5th, beginning with a brief viewing at 10:00 AM, followed by the service at 11:00 AM. Interment with military honors will occur at Norwood Cemetery, with a memorial luncheon afterward at the Jenkins VFW.

Jim’s unwavering curiosity and love for lifelong learning will remain an inspiration to all who knew him.
