Penny Hill – James E. Harrell, Sr, 77, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 3pm in Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30-2:30pm at Smith Funeral Service.
James, son of the late William and Mildred Harrell, grew up in Pitt County and was the owner of James Harrell Roofing. He later retired from the NC Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. For many years, he would help cook for the annual Belvoir Fire Department Auction. He enjoyed gardening, his chickens and goats, but his greatest love was operating any type of equipment.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Harrell; and brothers, Tommy, Jerry, and David Harrell.
James is survived by his son, James Harrell, Jr. and wife Sheila of Greenville; grandchildren, Harley and Scarlett Harrell, Ricky Smith, Haley Wishall, and Asia Vincent; six great grandchildren; and a brother, William Andrew "Jason" Harrell, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church, 2523 Floyd Harris Road, Greenville, NC, 27834 for their Food Ministry.

Alice Harris (Jake daughter)

April 27, 2025

I was blessed to meet Mr James through my father Jake. Those two were like two peas in a pod. They would sit and talk for hours about any and everything. Many times I would call Daddy to see what he's doing and he would say me and James sitting out here talking. I will call back an hour or so later Daddy what you doing me and James still out here talking LOL. The bond Mr James and my father had was inspiring. Mr James had the sweetest spirit and always had a smile on his face. He made himself right at home when we have family dinners, talking laughing and eating the day away. He will truly be missed but he will live forever in our hearts and memories.
