It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of James M. Hazen on April 20th, 2025, due to cardiac arrest. Jim, as he was called, is survived by his loving wife Ann, his son Matthew and beloved daughter-in-law Meghan. Jim is also survived by his sister Jeanne, her husband Dave, his brother Jack and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was born in Harbor Creek, Pennsylvania on December 17th, 1948. He was predeceased by his mother Anne, father John and daughter Lydia.
Jim was a devoted husband to Ann and father to Matthew. He took immense pride in his son and never missed a moment to cheer him on in all his endeavors throughout his life. He coached many basketball and baseball teams, and he was always a positive role model to Matthew and his friends. So much so that stories are still told of him to this day.
He was a tremendous presence in so many of our lives and always was there to offer a helping hand or encouragement to the people he cared about. Everyone who knew him would say that you always knew when Jim was in the room due to his larger-than-life personality and hilarious sense of humor, which was sometimes inappropriate, but always funny.
Jim attended Columbia University as an undergrad and Columbia Law School to pursue a career in law. One of his biggest passions in life outside of his family was the law and he became a well-respected maritime and personal injury attorney in New York City for many years. During his career he worked in the World Trade Centers and was a survivor of the 9/11 attacks. He retired in 2016 after an over 30-year career.
Jim and his wife Ann moved to Bluffton, SC 6-months ago to spend more time with their son and daughter-in-law. Jim very much enjoyed the added time with them and was grateful for the new friends they made in the community over that time.
Jim will be missed immensely by the many people he made an impact on, and his example will be remembered by his son and others that were lucky enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held at Sauls Funeral Home on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 1:00 pm.
