James Stephen Helmes

James Stephen Helmes, age 62, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024 at his home with, Elaine Helmes, his wife of 22 years. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for six years and completed community college. While working on airplanes in the military he developed a desire for flying and was working toward obtaining his pilot's license. During his time in the service, he lived in many states including Texas and Alaska. For the last fifteen years he and Mrs. Elaine have resided in Ringgold, Georgia and attended Lakeshore Park Baptist Church in Dalton, Georgia. While being outdoors, James enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing golf, and shooting guns. When indoors, he could be found bowling, playing video games or reading. He met Elaine while in high school but was disconnected during his time in the Air Force. Many years later they reconnected and were married in July of 2001. James loved animals and helping others but above all he loved his family. He was a devoted and selfless father, always putting the need of his family first. James was preceded in death by his wife, Tennie "Elaine" Wallin Helmes; parents, Henchly "Hank" Helmes and Anna Mae Foster Helmes; step-father, Raymond Foster; brothers, Donnie and Greg Helmes as well as his grandparents. Survivors include his daughters, Jessica Helmes, Cassandra (Dusty) Franco, Alexis Parker, and Abbie Helmes; goddaughter, Lauren (Jeff) Steel; siblings, Pam (James) Busby, Michael (Amy) Helmes; grandchildren, Angel, Hunter, Kelsey, Noah, Leighton, and Amelia, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Donald Helmes officiating. Burial will follow in Gordy Memorial Gardens.
