The Life & Legacy of James Quincy Hickson
James Quincy Hickson, son of the late Rev. Quincy Henry & Isabella Hickson (née,
Hightower) was born on Wednesday, September 23, 1942, in Richmond County,
Augusta, Georgia. At an early age, Jimmy as he was affectionately known, professed
his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized at young age. In his early teenage years, he
and the Hickson Family attended Sunday services at Macedonia Baptist Church in
Augusta, Georgia. Jimmy received his education in the Richmond County Public School
System in Augusta, Georgia.
As a teenager, Jimmy relocated to Washington, D.C. where he began to work various
jobs to support himself. During this time, Jimmy met and later married the late Frances
Louise Boatwright on Thursday, April 6, 1961, and to this union three beautiful children
were born; Voncedia L. "Bonnie", Dianne C. "Dee Dee" & Tyrone Q. Hickson. Though
the union ended, the couple remained the best of friends until Frances' passing on
Saturday, April 18, 2020.
He later met and fell in love with Yvonne "Bonnie" Stokes in the early 1970's. The two
merged their families together and he became the bonus dad to her daughters Patricia
"Pat" & Joanne "Apple" Stokes. Jimmy and Bonnie went on to spend the next 40 years
of their lives together traveling and shopping all over the tristate area.
He often loved traveling back to Washington, D.C. to spend time with his three children
and eight grandchildren, while also visiting one of his favorite restaurants, Ben's Chili
Bowl.
Throughout his life, Jimmy was employed as a Prison Guard at a correctional facility in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also worked for the Philadelphia Inquiry for 54 years as
a mailer & foreman Jimmy later became an entrepreneur owning two shoe repair shops,
a Greeting Card & Gift Shop, and Balloons on Wheels. Jimmy enjoyed traveling and
spending time with his family, especially during the holiday seasons. He also loved
making balloon arrangements for all of his grandchildren's birthday parties. During his
spare time he loved listening to jazz music and watching his favorite football team, the
Philadelphia Eagles. Jimmy was a foodie with oxtails, snapper soup, curry goat, duck,
Maryland blue crabs and dropped pound cake being some of his favorite foods, along
with anything that Bonnie would cook.
Jimmy peacefully transitioned on the evening of Tuesday, April 16, 2024 in
