James Earl Holbrook, a beloved husband, father, and dedicated member of the community, passed away on December 8, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on November 20, 1936, James enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Network Technician with AT&T, a role that exemplified his commitment to service and innovation.

A devoted deacon at Creekside Church of Island Creek, James was a pillar of faith and kindness in the lives of those he touched. His musical talents brought joy to many, as he was an accomplished musician who loved to play Old Time Music, Bluegrass, and Gospel. Whether strumming his guitar, picking on the banjo, or plucking on the dulcimer, James’s passion for music resonated deeply with friends and family alike. He was also a proud member of The Mule Band and The Hallelujah Boys, where his spirit and creativity shone brightly.

In addition to his musical endeavors, James cherished the art of carpentry and woodworking, crafting beautiful pieces, including his home, that reflected both his skill and creative vision. He also enjoyed square dancing, where he could be found lively on the dance floor, sharing laughter and creating memories with loved ones.

James leaves behind his devoted wife, Jo Ann Holbrook, along with their children: Scott E. (Debbie) Holbrook, Connie (Chris) Tackett, James C. (Dana) Holbrook, and Susie (Darryl Elswick) Tackett. He is also survived by his siblings: William (Vernice) Holbrook, Carolyn H. Gilliam, and Cathy (Dean) Harville, who will carry forward his legacy of love. James Earl will be missed by his grandchildren, James (Rachel) Williamson, Abby (Ain Simpson) Holbrook, Katie Holbrook, Samantha Tackett, Nathaniel Bartley, JoAnn Tackett, Jazmyn (Cody) Mitchell, Jessie (Braley Johnson) Tackett, Connor Tackett, and Matt Tackett, as well as his great-grandchildren, Raegan, Brandon, Reese, Austin, Rosalyn, and Aiden.

He is preceded in death by his beloved grandsons, Waylon Tanner Holbrook and William Christopher Tackett, as well as his brothers Ellis Holbrook, Edward Holbrook, John Holbrook, and Kenneth Holbrook. James was also preceded in death by his cherished sisters, Draxie Bailey, Mary Holbrook, Judy Jones Phillips, and Betty Hobbs.

The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate his life during visitation on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM at Lucas & Son Funeral Home in Pikeville, Kentucky, followed by a funeral service the next day, Thursday, December 11, beginning at 1:00 PM, with burial to follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery.

James Earl Holbrook will be remembered not only for his contributions as a technician and musician but also for his unwavering love for his family and community. His spirit will continue to resonate through the hearts of everyone who knew him, leaving an indelible mark that will not be forgotten.
