Obituary of James Leonard Horwath
James Leonard Horwath, age 84, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at his home in Plainfield. Born on July 16, 1941, in Joliet, IL, Jim was the youngest child of the late Anton and Anna (nee Kostelec) Horwath. A proud Joliet native, he began working at an early age and carried a strong work ethic throughout his life.
Jim spent more than four decades as a dedicated employee of U.S. Steel, ultimately retiring as a Plant Supervisor. His commitment to his work and community did not end there-he later returned to the workforce as Plant Manager at Granitewerks in Cicero, IL, before retiring fully in 2005. James's talents extended beyond the workplace; he was a skilled handyman, known by his family as someone who could fix, build, or create anything.
Jim had a deep love for the outdoors. He found joy in hunting, fishing, and especially in racing pigeons, a pursuit he stayed active in for many years. He balanced his rugged hobbies with a gentle spirit shown through his love of cooking, baking, and even sewing-skills often passed down through generations in his family.
A devoted family man, Jim was always the one to step forward in times of need. He is survived by his two sons, Paul (Christine) Horwath and James L. Horwath; his beloved granddaughter, Marlowe Rose Horwath; and his sister, Patricia (the late James) Hyde. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Horwath; along with his four brothers, Robert, Raymond (the late Donna), Richard (the late Nancy), and Clarence (the late Alice); and his two sisters, Bernice (the late James) Jones and Helen (the late Leonard) Krause.
As it was Jim's request, cremation rites have been accorded and inurnment will take place in the near future.
