James L. Hyatt, Jr. "Padre," 86, entered into peaceful rest on Wednesday February 5, 2025. He was born on May 4, 1938 in Lancaster, South Carolina to the late James L. Hyatt, Sr., & Loree McManus Hyatt.
Along with his parents, Jim was predeceased by his infant daughter, Julia Melissa Hyatt; and brother, Richard Clyde Hyatt.
Jim was a well-educated man with a servant's heart. He was a graduate of Wofford College and went on to graduate from Candler School of Theology. Jim proudly served our country in the United States National Guard. In his younger years, Jim loved playing football and was a skilled linebacker! He was an avid University of South Carolina fan who would pass his love for the game on to his children and eventually his grandchildren. Never one to sit still, Jim worked diligently to become an Ordained Elder for the SC Conference of The United Methodist Church (UMC). He served as a Pastor in local churches for over 43 years. Above all else, Jim loved his family with his whole heart. He will be deeply missed for the amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend he truly was.
Left to cherish Jim's memory are his adoring wife of over 21 years, The Rev. Dr. Sandra S. Poirel of Pawleys Island, SC; sons, James "Jimmy" Lewis Hyatt, II, (Deb) of Wallace, NC & Donald Llyod Hyatt (Allison) of Clover, SC; daughter, Deborah Luanne Hyatt of Simpsonville, SC; step-sons, Dennis Anthony Poirel of Myrtle Beach & Christopher Lee Poirel and wife, Brooke of Pawleys Island, SC; grandchildren, Richard Hyatt and wife, Meg, Matthew, Hyatt, Hayley and husband, Collin, Jenna and husband, Tyler & Topher; great-grandchildren, Lucas, Reid, Myles, Henry, Noah, Virginia & Hannah; brother, William Donald Hyatt of Lancaster, SC; niece, Elizabeth Hyatt Peninger (Wes) of Lancaster; as well as a large, loving, extended family and many supportive friends, neighbors and church family.
A Celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday February 8, 2025 at 11:00AM at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, 4182 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. The family will gather to greet friends following the service, in the Family Life Center.
