James B. Millis, 97, of Columbus, passed away at Four Seasons Health Center on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. Jim was born May 7, 1927, in Campbellsburg IN, to Frank T. Millis and Ruth Braxton Millis, the youngest of three siblings. His sister Mary Louise Johnson and brother Dr. Arthur B. Millis preceded him in death.
Jim served in the United States Army from 1945-1947, then returned to Butler University to earn his BS degree. He was a proud member of Sigma Chi fraternity, making friends for life. Jim married Sara West on April 2, 1950. They had one son, Gregory. Jim worked for Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation (formerly W.J. Holliday & Co.) for 24 years where he also made close friendships. Jim and Sara moved to Florida where they owned a men’s clothing store in Delray Beach, retiring to enjoy more time on the golf course. They returned to Indiana in 2006 to be farther from hurricanes and closer to family.
Jim was an avid reader. He enjoyed Butler basketball, Big Band music, DIY projects, and traveling the country. His well-planned itineraries took them to 49 states; later he completed his goal to view all 92 county courthouses in Indiana. One of his most treasured experiences was being included on an Indy Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2015.
Jim was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Gregory B. Millis. He is survived by his wife, Sara; daughter-in-law, Barbara Millis (Paul Jansen); grandchildren, Matthew Millis (Christie), Brian Millis (Ashley), and Elizabeth Bolka (Lee); great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Layla, Mackenzie, Caroline, Cora, Gregory, J.J., and Madeline; and several nieces and nephews.
The family plans a Celebration of Life in the private dining room at Four Seasons Retirement Center, 1901 Taylor Road, Columbus IN, from 3:00 to 5:00 on Saturday, June 8. Friends are invited to attend.
