James M. Johnstone, "Jim" a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 85. Born in 1940, in Columbus, Ohio, Jim's life was marked by a deep commitment to family, faith, and hard work.
Jim obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Management from The Ohio State University in 1963. His career began at The Ohio State University during the esteemed Woody Hayes era, where he ran the concessions, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit early on. He then devoted 43 years to General Motors, serving in the purchasing department, where his diligence and professionalism shone throughout his tenure.
Jim was not only known for his professional achievements but also for his immense sense of responsibility towards his family. He instilled values of hard work and good financial management in his children, leading by example and demonstrating the importance of diligence, giving, and devotion to his faith in Jesus Christ. His unwavering faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through challenges and shaping his positive outlook.
With a way with words and a keen sense of humor, Jim had the remarkable ability to uplift those around him. He cherished his time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fostering a loving family environment. His hobbies included camping and enjoying the great outdoors with his loved ones, woodworking, and tending to various projects around the house, which reflected his hands-on approach to life.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years (God bless him), Loretta Johnstone; his children, Jim (Becky) Johnstone and Susan (Ron) Cutshall; his cherished grandchildren, Jessica, Nathaniel (Abbi), Kristin (Jared), Daniel, Micah, Nicholas, Jonathan, and Ainsley (Nathan); his great-grandchildren, Maggie, Evelyn, Sammie, Evening, Lochlan, Elijah, Ailee, and Aubree; along with his nephew, Tim Johnstone; and numerous extended relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Emily Johnstone; his children, Carol Ann Johnstone and Steven Y. Johnstone; and his brother, Bruce Johnstone.
Jim will be remembered as a pillar of strength and love, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025 from 9 am to 10 am at Newcomer Centerville Chapel (820 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd., Dayton, OH 45459). Funeral service will begin at 10 am. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens (5600 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43213).
