James Thomas Lawson III, affectionately known as "Grape", entered eternal rest on October 28, 2025, at the age of 51. Born on June 21, 1974, in Geneva County, Alabama, to the late Scherry Preyer and Johnell White, James was greatly influenced by his loving grandparents, Queen and James Lawson Sr. He was a proud native of
Mobile, Alabama, where he built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and service to others.
James accepted Christ at an early age and joined Prosperity Missionary Baptist Church. A proud student of Alabama State University, he attended on a football scholarship, forming lifelong friendships and memories along the way. During his college years, he met Denitra Carroll, and from that union came two beautiful daughters, Jadah and Jamyah. In 2006, James later married his beloved wife, Heather Washington, with whom he raised two amazing children, Anthony and Alayna. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and countless cherished moments.
James worked as an Implementation Engineer for Uniti Fiber and was truly a jack of all trades. Whether it was carpentry, auto remodeling, or any other project that required skill and creativity, he excelled with remarkable versatility. His work ethic, dedication, and drive reflected the same passion he carried into every part of his life.
An avid outdoorsman, James found peace and joy in hunting, fishing, and riding four-wheelers. He was also a lifelong sports enthusiast and a proud Alabama Crimson Tide fan, Roll Tide! James was known for his wisdom, humor, and kindness. He never met a stranger and had an extraordinary gift for making everyone around him feel seen, valued, and loved. To know him was to love him, and his light touched countless lives. James is now reunited in eternity with his beloved mother Scherry Preyer, grandparents Queen and James Lawson Sr., uncle James Lawson Jr., and aunt Linda Milliner.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Heather Washington; four loving children - Jadah Lawson (Tei'Quan), Anthony Washington, Jamyah Lawson, and Alayna Mickles; five adored grandchildren - Ivy, Alani, Stormi, Emeri, and Alyssa; parents Leroy Preyer (Judy) and Johnell White; siblings Leroy Preyer Jr., Kenneth Preyer, Ceakima Preyer, Jamal White, Kenyetta White, Nakia Robinson, Shana White, and Derek Smith; goddaughter, Zariya Anthony; special friends Jared Weiler and Lenard Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
