James A. "Jake" Leahy, of Alpharetta, GA and formerly of Mahopac, NY, passed away suddenly after a brief illness on May 26, 2025 at the age of 64. He was born in the Bronx, NY, son of the late Michael and Tina (nee Edwards) Leahy. Jake had an infectious smile, a big heart, quick wit, and an unwavering loyalty. He was at his happiest when he was with his family and friends.
Throughout his life, Jake's love for sports was a constant source of joy. He was a huge sports fan (Cowboys, Knicks, Orioles, and Islanders), as well as collegiate sports and even a little Monday Night Wrestling. Jake could often be found in the stands cheering for his teams, while also putting opposing fans in their places. His passion for college hockey led him and Carrie to the NCAA Men's Frozen Four tournament every year, regardless of its location. Jake and Carrie started each and every day enjoying a cup of coffee while watching Sports Center.
One of his and Carrie's shared passions was travelling. Their trips to Nashville, TN, and Panama City, FL, were among their most treasured memories, filled with laughter, adventure, and the simple pleasure of each other's company. As avid animal lovers, they would visit the local zoos for animal encounters with lemurs, Komodo dragons and anteaters. Jake adored their fur kiddos. He would often be found napping with their beloved cats, Lucy, Riley, and Zack.
As a music lover, Jake loved attending live concerts. His favorite by far was Bruce Springsteen, seeing him well over 20 times. Jake was always eager to talk sports or share a story over a pint. His big personality and genuineness were loved by all who met him. These qualities made him a favorite at local restaurants where he and Carrie were weekly regulars, at his job where he worked as an accountant, and at his church where he faithfully served as an usher.
Jake is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Carrie, and his siblings: Michael (Cathy), John (Laura), Pamela Nieto (Joseph), and Vincent (Fernando). Jake was a larger than life, fun-loving uncle who enjoyed spending time with his many nieces and nephews. Uncle Jake will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
All are welcome to attend a visitation on Monday, June 2nd from 4-8 PM at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 3rd at 10AM at St. John The Evangelist Church, also in Mahopac. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery in Brewster.
