James. C. Malone, 86, of Lake Wee-Ma-Tuk, Cuba, Illinois, passed away on October 23, 2024. Born on October 4, 1938, in Canton, Illinois, to Edward and Irene (Werry) Malone, Jim devoted his life to bringing out the best in every person fortunate enough to know him. Whether his lifelong teaching and coaching, or simply by imparting his wisdom during a heartfelt conversation or humorous story, Jim's presence left an indelible impression, and, more often than not, made a life-changing, positive impact. An encounter with Jim left everyone, from store clerks to lifelong friends and family, feeling happier, more self-confident, more empowered, and more loved.
Jim's life passion was the positive development of children into adulthood. His innate love for people of all ages was expertly and successfully experienced as teacher, coach, superintendent of Agnes Hefty-Puffer School District, VIT Community School District, and Spring Lake Community School District. Spoon River College also benefited from Jim's work as Finance Officer.
Jim was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and We-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, horse racing, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and above all, storytelling. Jim loved spending time with family and friends, many of whom were his former students as well as the children and grandchildren of those students.
A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Jim is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Karen (Yerbic) and five children: Michele (Lynn) Eich, Dianne (Marty) Lozier, Julie (Chris) Breese, Mark Colvin, John (Mary) Colvin. Jim's eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren brought him immeasurable pride and joy. He is also survived by his cousin Neil (Jane) Williams, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Jim into death were his parents and brothers, Thomas, Bill, and John.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Sedgwick Funeral Home and Crematory. 1995 N. Main St., Canton. Beginning with Rosary prayer at 9:45, visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at which time the service will begin. Deacon Curtis Theyse will officiate. Burial of ashes in St. Joseph Cemetery, Canton, will follow the service. Memorial donations may be made to Red Dog Cystic Fibrosis and St. Mary's Food Pantry or Fulton County Humane Society.
